Arctic Cathedral, Tromso

(3.6/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. Use our Tromso tour planner to visit Arctic Cathedral on your trip to Tromso, and learn what else travelers and our writers recommend seeing nearby.

  • You can access this Cathedral in micro or walking over the bridge that connects the central part of Tromsø with the island where this Cathedral. We went to a concert of midnight (of 30 minutes of duration) in taxi and returned walking by the bridge, as was a night spectacular, and suspect that the bus was going to take much (also, several assistants to the concert also returned by the bridge). Is has a beautiful view of Tromsø from outside of the Cathedral and in addition, just that night, while expected to enter, saw a "northern light" dancing between green and Red! The Church is simple as well as the concert (tenor, saxophone and piano).

  • We visited the cathedral as part of our city tour. It really looks intersting but you don't see much more from the inside than you would looking through the windows from the outside, so I think it is ...  more »

  • Visited Tromsdalen church, (a parish church and not a cathedral) in late February this year, interior compact but striking with the chandeliers, and stained glass opposite the organ loft over the main entrance foyer, where tourists can purchase postcards etc. Visited in daylight, would like to visit for an evening service, must be impressive.
  • Beautiful building. You´d better check the opening hours. Concerts are arranged during the months of midnight sun.
  • Very beautiful church. Pity it was closed.
  • Interesting architecture. The midnight concerts in summer are well worth a visit.
  • Nice place to visit. Also the orchestra is famous.
