Arctic Cathedral, Tromso

3.6
#1 of 8 in Sightseeing in Tromso
Architectural Building Religious Site
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. • Since we were told by our tour director that only 7% of Norwegians attend church, finding a working church is a rare find especially a pretty church in a remote city. It is pretty but not architectura...  more »
  • Sure, the Arctic Cathedral is a must if you visited Tromsø. Getting there is no problem, it is now just over the bridge (attention: only right sidewalk, left is reserved for bicycles): 1 km. Ticket price too high: 50 Crowns per person from 12. Very impressive modern organ, it is advisable to listen to a concert, whenever the opportunity arises. The glass front is also nice, overall consistent, though too modern for me. Interesting seating.

  • I'm sorry but I could not find anything interesting. Let me start by saying that I'm not a fan of churches in General and that I'm not an expert, but I didn't really find anything beautiful: strips inside as it is stripped out. When I visited I, moreover, the decorations of the organ there were because they were cleaning ... The great mosaic in the back of the Church is nothing that ... The Norway is that country where to go to see the nature, but in the cities do not have much to show and Tromso is not far behind with this Cathedral. Discouraged the visit internally for 50 Crowns.

  • Beautiful building. Yuo can see panoramic view of Tromso in front of this church.
  • A wonderful building to look at and around. I would have rather the back wall were a clear window which looked up the valley (as I believe it used to be) and not blocked by white screens from a previous sermon, and it would have been nice to go upstairs or hear the organ play.
  • Very quiet humbling place in middle of nowhere Fisherman's grave on voyage
  • Went to a midnight performance of Norwegian songs and music. Lovely acoustics and a good trio of singer, Cello, and piano/organist.
  • Beautiful glass window and a great view of Tromso.
