Arctic Cathedral, Tromso

3.6/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop.
