Arctic Cathedral, Tromso

(3.6/5 based on 1,900+ reviews on the web)
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. • It's worth to choose the long walk across the bridge, as slowly the Church "unfolds in its architecture" according to Tromsdalen. The entry is justified, because with this money on maintenance is funded and is whacked on the population. Too bad that the wall behind the altar has been built so high and the wonderful glass image is affected.

  • Quite a walk from where our ship had docked but well worth the effort. The cathedral is so simple in design but beautiful. The stained glass window is especially impressive.Excellent toilet facilities ...  more »
  • Great from the outside but inside has nothing in particular if it is the fresco on the front that turns in the dark. Nice acoustics for concerts (quite a few apparently).

  • Visited Tromsdalen church, (a parish church and not a cathedral) in late February this year, interior compact but striking with the chandeliers, and stained glass opposite the organ loft over the main entrance foyer, where tourists can purchase postcards etc. Visited in daylight, would like to visit for an evening service, must be impressive.
  • Beautiful building. You´d better check the opening hours. Concerts are arranged during the months of midnight sun.
  • Very beautiful church. Pity it was closed.
  • Interesting architecture. The midnight concerts in summer are well worth a visit.
  • Nice place to visit. Also the orchestra is famous.
