Arctic Cathedral, Tromso

3.5
#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Tromso
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. • This is a beautiful cathedral in a modern Nordic style. Worth checking out if you're in the area. During the winter months they have 'northern lights' concerts around midnight. Some great photos to be had at night as they light the whole place up.
  • An absolute must if you are in Trømso! There's a public bus stop right across from the cathedral so it's easy to get there. The stained glass is just amazing. We went in the early afternoon to try and catch the sun. There's a small entrance fee but well worth it! The stained glass is difficult to see from the outside.
  • Peaceful and beautiful view of town outside the Cathedral! Must visit spot in down! Day time and night time with different view and feeling come in the afternoon and stay till night you will feel it!
  • It's one of the most iconic building in Tromso & the most iconic cathedral in the world (According to me). Arctic Cathedral is on the other side of the city so you can either walk up the entire bridge or take a bus & come here. The bridge is 1 km long.
  • It is located on the land opposite to Tromso town centre. If the weather is nice, it would be the best to visit the Arctic Cathedral by walking through the bridge (which i don't remember the name, just the bridge connecting town centre and the opposite land) You could get nice photo of the outlook of the cathedral on that bridge. The Arctic Cathedral is just a small cathedral. but you can get nice snapshots of panorama view of the town since it is up on the hill (just a small hill, not very steep)
