The Arctic Cathedral, Tromsdalen

For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit The Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. • Visited the Arctic Cathedral for a choir performance, which was impressive. Most of the service was in Norwegian but that didn’t bother me. The church itself is beautiful. A must do if there’s a...  more »
  • Expencive but nice. Nice building seen from the outside, but it costs 6 euros to go in. Rip off. Plenty to see from the outside  more »
  • We came and visited for the midnight concert. Started early due to New Years, but the singing was amazing. A pity that they didn’t have any of the music for sale, but having a copy of the programme...  more »

  • Beautiful building. When coming from the bridge there is an illusion and you can see straight through it. Very clever. Wanted to fo in but 50Kr so peeped through the window. Much more impressive from outside.
  • A beautiful cathedral but honestly nothing else. It's beautiful but only to see and take pictures maybe but there is not much else to do. Then again it's a cathedral.
  • The place is beautiful, especially with the snow in the background it was a sight to behold. The unique characteristic of the cathedral is it's architecture. From in front, it looks like it's made completely of glass. A must visit in Tromsø, even if you have to cross the bridge to reach it.
  • The designer wanted this to be a 'NATURE' church having clear glass in the main feature window, so the natural light and views could be enjoyed by all the worshippers inside.....The congregation complained about the 'weird' lighting mostly due to the fact sunglasses had to be worn.....so a stained glass window was commissioned making the designer very angry to the point of leaving the city and moving to Oslo never to return......outside is amazing and the inside with the ornate organ alter and beautiful stain glass centre piece makes this a great point of interest.
  • What a beautiful and unique architecture in the middle of the city. Loved the calmness and serenity inside! Must visit when you are in Tromsø!
