Stavanger Cathedral, Stavanger
(4.2/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Standing at the entrance to the harbor and the city, Stavanger Cathedral represents the only medieval cathedral in Norway that has preserved its original appearance. The church was built in the early 12th century in Anglo-Norman style, but after a fire in 1272 the chancel was restored in the Gothic style. The cathedral was dedicated to the 9th-century bishop St. Svithun, whose arm was one of the original relics kept in the church. Legend has it that the cathedral's first bishop Reinald raised the funds for the building's construction by marrying King Sigurd the Crusader to his second wife when the bishop of Bergen refused to do so. The park around the cathedral provides a peaceful place for a walk and offers several picnic spots. • Like many cathedrals. Typical façade and pretty inside. Nice acoustics. Good that it often is open to the public.

  • Charming 1000 year old cathedral offering an escape from the noise and bustle on the harbourside. Christmas services are particularly lovely even if you don't speak norsk. Surrounded by colourful flow...  more »
  • Stavanger Cathedral is from the first half of the century, 1100, and the oldest standing church building in Norway. It is the of the country's cathedrals that to the greatest extent has retained its medieval expression, and the only one that has been in continuous use since the 1300 's. The Cathedral is located in Stavanger the Breiavatnet Lake, in the South, between the square with the Northwest, Awake in the Cathedral square to the North, and the King's farm in the South West. The Cathedral was a Roman Catholic bishopric after the Diocese of Stavanger was established about 1125. • Very beautiful place! Too bad I couldn't get inside.
  • Beautiful cathedral, not very impressive, but worth seeing it.
  • Nice cathedral, though not very impressive. It looks a bit boring because of all the empty walls and the lack of decorations.
  • A beautiful and very very very old cathedral. Must stop in stavanger. Tours available.
  • Nice old church next to the tourist information
