Stavanger Cathedral, Stavanger

4.0
Standing at the entrance to the harbor and the city, Stavanger Cathedral represents the only medieval cathedral in Norway that has preserved its original appearance. The church was built in the early 12th century in Anglo-Norman style, but after a fire in 1272 the chancel was restored in the Gothic style. The cathedral was dedicated to the 9th-century bishop St. Svithun, whose arm was one of the original relics kept in the church. Legend has it that the cathedral's first bishop Reinald raised the funds for the building's construction by marrying King Sigurd the Crusader to his second wife when the bishop of Bergen refused to do so. The park around the cathedral provides a peaceful place for a walk and offers several picnic spots. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Stavanger trip simple and quick.

  • Built in 1125, oldest functioning church in Norway. So interesting and accessible. Beautiful pipe organ and ornate decor. What a treat!  more »
  • It is not the thing you'd regret if you do not give a go. But the situation makes it attractive for pictures.  more »
  • As you stroll around Stavanger, be sure to stop in to the Cathedral and check it out. The cathedral is lined with crests of the noble families and each is truly a work of art. So stop by and see this ...  more »

  • Beautiful, historic church, nicely preserved. Much nicer inside than out - so I was told. I could have commented on that if they posted visiting hours. Many disappointed visitors were wondering if/when they would open up at all in the near future. Oh well .... Scandinavian countries don't really care about visitors.
  • More impressive inside that it is outside. Norway's oldest cathedral (not including the stave churches). Free for kids 12 and under.
  • Beautiful early medieval church!
  • A beautiful and very very very old cathedral. Must stop in stavanger. Tours available.
  • Beautiful old church with tons of history. Make sure you get a tour to really appreciate the building. Fantastic acoustics. Check the calendar for concerts!

Where to stay in Stavanger

As with any Norwegian city, the high price of accommodations in Stavanger might be a bit of a shock. Luckily, the Norwegians have such a fondness for outdoor activities that most tourist destinations seem to be well served by several campsites in nearby areas. Rent a tent or a rustic cabin to appreciate Norway’s nature and cut costs. Alternatively, look for hotels in the city center around the Storhaug borough. Slightly outside of Stavanger lies the popular Sola Beach, where high-end hotels put you just steps from the sand.
