Stavanger Cathedral, Stavanger

4.2
#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Rogaland
Standing at the entrance to the harbor and the city, Stavanger Cathedral represents the only medieval cathedral in Norway that has preserved its original appearance. The church was built in the early 12th century in Anglo-Norman style, but after a fire in 1272 the chancel was restored in the Gothic style. The cathedral was dedicated to the 9th-century bishop St. Svithun, whose arm was one of the original relics kept in the church. Legend has it that the cathedral's first bishop Reinald raised the funds for the building's construction by marrying King Sigurd the Crusader to his second wife when the bishop of Bergen refused to do so. The park around the cathedral provides a peaceful place for a walk and offers several picnic spots. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Stavanger trip simple and quick.

Built in 1125, oldest functioning church in Norway. So interesting and accessible. Beautiful pipe organ and ornate decor. What a treat!  more »

It is not the thing you'd regret if you do not give a go. But the situation makes it attractive for pictures.  more »

More impressive inside that it is outside. Norway's oldest cathedral (not including the stave churches). Free for kids 12 and under.

Beautiful cathedral, not very impressive, but worth seeing it.

    Beautiful old church ⛪ :)

Nice cathedral, though not very impressive. It looks a bit boring because of all the empty walls and the lack of decorations.

Where to stay in Stavanger

As with any Norwegian city, the high price of accommodations in Stavanger might be a bit of a shock. Luckily, the Norwegians have such a fondness for outdoor activities that most tourist destinations seem to be well served by several campsites in nearby areas. Rent a tent or a rustic cabin to appreciate Norway’s nature and cut costs. Alternatively, look for hotels in the city center around the Storhaug borough. Slightly outside of Stavanger lies the popular Sola Beach, where high-end hotels put you just steps from the sand.
