Stavanger Cathedral, Stavanger
Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Churches, Tourist Spots
Standing at the entrance to the harbor and the city, Stavanger Cathedral represents the only medieval cathedral in Norway that has preserved its original appearance. The church was built in the early 12th century in Anglo-Norman style, but after a fire in 1272 the chancel was restored in the Gothic style. The cathedral was dedicated to the 9th-century bishop St. Svithun, whose arm was one of the original relics kept in the church. Legend has it that the cathedral's first bishop Reinald raised the funds for the building's construction by marrying King Sigurd the Crusader to his second wife when the bishop of Bergen refused to do so. The park around the cathedral provides a peaceful place for a walk and offers several picnic spots. Beautiful old church with tons of history. Make sure you get a tour to really appreciate the building. Fantastic acoustics. Check the calendar for concerts!
The oldest cathedral in Norway. It is really beautiful to look at and is located at the very center of the town, so no excuses on not having a look.
