Norwegian Petroleum Museum, Stavanger

4.4
#2 of 17 in Museums in Stavanger
Walk through the 12-step production process of canning sardines and fish balls at Norwegian Petroleum Museum. This trade was the leading source of income for locals between 1890 and 1960. One of the seven departments of the Stavanger Museum, this charming attraction was established in 1975. The machinery and tools are consistent with those that would have been used in the 1920s, and are still in working order. Upstairs you'll find a collection of can label designs. As exhibits are not labeled, be sure to grab a brochure at the entrance or take a guided tour. Stop by the gift shop on the way out for some canned sardines for the road. • To be honest I wasn't expecting much. But it's part of Stavanger history so why not. After a very friendly welcom I went to the first floor where an old movie shows all about the canning and the fish....  more »

  • This place is big enough to be interesting and small enough to fit in a few hours. You can easily get there and it tells the story on oil and gas from start till end. It is telling the Norwegian story but is generic enough. Great place to visit with kids too.
  • Great interactive exhibition. Recorded for all: adults, children and grands as well. Do not miss escape room and try yourself with interesting exercises related to subject and final quiz as well. Great fun for entire family. Allocated 4 hours at least to rely enjoy the place.
  • Great museum, very informative and has a lot to offer despite being small. I loved the films shown as well - a really nice touch.
  • Really interesting exhibition, as others have said the emergency evacuation simulation is really lifelike, trying to find your way out in the pitch black with alarms going off is quite frightening! Also very much enjoyed the main room full of large scale models of assorted rigs and the old drill heads worn down after use. Well worth a visit.
  • A really nice museum on the history of the Norwegian Oil Industry and off-shore oil production in general. All the descriptions are also in English and very well thought out. What surprised me the most is the fact that they not only speak about the positive effects the oil industry is having on Norway but also talk about side effects, accidents and climate change. Definitely well worth the 2 hours you should spend here.

Where to stay in Stavanger

As with any Norwegian city, the high price of accommodations in Stavanger might be a bit of a shock. Luckily, the Norwegians have such a fondness for outdoor activities that most tourist destinations seem to be well served by several campsites in nearby areas. Rent a tent or a rustic cabin to appreciate Norway’s nature and cut costs. Alternatively, look for hotels in the city center around the Storhaug borough. Slightly outside of Stavanger lies the popular Sola Beach, where high-end hotels put you just steps from the sand.
