In this super modern museum is the oil extraction in all its facets. Countless models give a beautiful image of the operation. You can do a simulation of some activities on board a drilling rig. Provide enough time (at least 3 hours) to get a good understanding

The idea of an oil museum doest sound a tractive or interesting. But it's better than it seems lots of information about oil and the oil business. Very interactive and lots of models of ships, oil pla...  more »

Fabulous display of historical evolution of the Oil and Gas industry in Norway. A few quiz sets as well, if you want to test your knowledge on the subject. The answers are all in the information already on display. Watch a poignant, thought-provoking film if you have 15 minutes to spare. In English, Norwegian (not sure if any other language subtitles offered). The museum is on a superb location, and yes, housed in a rather 'handsome' building. I loved the architectural and design details. Get a fantastic view of the harbor from the upper deck. There's a bit of fun surprise for kids, and perhaps adults could try it out as well. 😊 A must-see if you're in Stavanger.

Norwegian museums are smaller, single issue than I used too. So this is more of a large self contained exhibit. I learned heaps, the size of everything in the oil industry is mind boggling. Helpful staff make a well worthwhile 1-2 he visit easy.

Great day out. Visited whilst in port on a cruise holiday. Went in prepared to order tickets in Norwegian but then got completely lost when they thought I was a native speaker. It was very funny as my blank look resulted in a 'oh are you English, you're Norwegian is very good!' the museum was great for all ages and everything was available in both Norwegian and English with a good mixture of items to view.

Probably one of the best museums I've been to. To be honest, I was completely blown away. A museum about petroleum...? Come on, it sounds horribly tiresome and lifeless, but they managed to make it extremely engaging and interesting. I was blown away by the introductory film they showed and from there, a lot of interactive exhibits. Great fun for the entire family!

It was very interesting! The exhibition is organized very well, informing about so many different aspects of oil production. There are some nice interactive activities.

Where to stay in Stavanger

As with any Norwegian city, the high price of accommodations in Stavanger might be a bit of a shock. Luckily, the Norwegians have such a fondness for outdoor activities that most tourist destinations seem to be well served by several campsites in nearby areas. Rent a tent or a rustic cabin to appreciate Norway’s nature and cut costs. Alternatively, look for hotels in the city center around the Storhaug borough. Slightly outside of Stavanger lies the popular Sola Beach, where high-end hotels put you just steps from the sand.
