The Vigeland Museum / Vigeland Museum, Oslo

#1 of 687 in Museums in Norway
At The Vigeland Museum / Vigeland Museum, walk through the largest park of oversized expressionist sculptures of people made by a single artist. Constructed of granite, bronze, and wrought iron, 200 nude statues portray men, women, children, and families. The park and the museum are the legacy of an early 20th-century Norwegian artist, Gustav Vigeland, who made a deal with the municipality to donate all of his work to the city in return for a workshop. The sculpture garden features five sections stretching from the main gate to the monolithic plateau. Look for the famed "angry baby" sculpture on the bridge near the children's playground. Vigeland's other works, including drawings, sketches, woodcuttings, and photographs can be seen in the neoclassical building of the museum along with his letters, writings, and a personal library. • Beautiful park, with beautiful life-sized and real images of the artist Vigeland. Very worth it.

  • Beautiful way to understand and appreciate the brain and brawn behind the amazing sculptures and beauty of Vigeland park.
  • There are more statues that were not featured out in the park. Great for hardcore sculpture / art fans, but may not be super interesting, as many of the pieces are already featured in the park. The sculptures not featured in the park deal with dark subject matter like oppression and death, so it may not be appropriate for young children.
  • A gorgeous park with stunning depictions of humanity in statue form. It was a highlight of my trip to Norway.
  • Best experience I had in Oslo. There are many sculptures and a few are massive. Go before visiting the part located nearby to gain some perspective to the art.
  • Disturbing sculptures, unless you are into naked men, women, and kids mixed together in all possible possitions yuk

Where to stay in Oslo

A majority of Oslo's hotels and smaller accommodations cluster along Karl Johans Gate, the city's main drag connecting many of its downtown attractions. If you want something a bit more colorful than the average hotel, consider one of the many bed and breakfasts that have been cropping up in recent years. To escape the crowded streets, but still be walking distance from major sights, stay in the Frogner or Majorstuen neighborhoods near the royal palace. As you can probably guess, lodging is quite expensive in this European capital.
