Art Museum Museum
At The Vigeland Museum / Vigeland-museet, walk through the largest park of oversized expressionist sculptures of people made by a single artist. Constructed of granite, bronze, and wrought iron, 200 nude statues portray men, women, children, and families. The park and the museum are the legacy of an early 20th-century Norwegian artist, Gustav Vigeland, who made a deal with the municipality to donate all of his work to the city in return for a workshop. The sculpture garden features five sections stretching from the main gate to the monolithic plateau. Look for the famed "angry baby" sculpture on the bridge near the children's playground. Vigeland's other works, including drawings, sketches, woodcuttings, and photographs can be seen in the neoclassical building of the museum along with his letters, writings, and a personal library. • There are more statues that were not featured out in the park. Great for hardcore sculpture / art fans, but may not be super interesting, as many of the pieces are already featured in the park. The sculptures not featured in the park deal with dark subject matter like oppression and death, so it may not be appropriate for young children.
  • Best experience I had in Oslo. There are many sculptures and a few are massive. Go before visiting the part located nearby to gain some perspective to the art.
  • The museum is the perfect addition to a visit to the Frognerpark / Vigelandspark. Getting to know about Gustav Vigeland, his life is a fantastic opportunity to understand his work even better. A lot of models used for statues in the park can be studied here. Temporary exhibitions from local and foreign artists are also interesting to see. If you're into sculpting and art and want to visit the sculpture park I'd strongly suggest to also pay a visit to this museum.
  • Really amazing. Go here before you go to the park.
  • I totally recommend to visit this museum before going to the Vigeland Park and see the original sculptures. Not only because Vigeland himself worked and lived inside this beautiful building, but because the enormous dimensions of his plaster sculptures can be seen closer than in the park and the history of the artist can be learned easily, which is really worth to be known too.
