The Kon-Tiki Museum, Oslo

4.4
Dedicated to one of Norway's most well-known pioneering spirits, The Kon-Tiki Museum displays the vessels, artifacts, and personal effects of Thor Heyerdahl. Heyerdahl famously set sail in 1947 on a raft from South America and traveled to Polynesia in order to reinforce his theory about pre-Columbian island colonization. Visit the museum to see the Kon-Tiki craft used on this excursion, as well as other reed boats Heyerdahl employed on later expeditions. Wander the different exhibits focused on Heyerdahl's life, his vessels, and the life and culture of the islands he visited. Don't miss the collection of more than 8,000 books--a tribute to Heyerdahl's prolific career as a scientist, researcher, and writer. • Cute museum with through information about the expeditions. A bit aboriginal knowledge. Next to the Fram museum so you can easily visit two.
  • This is one of my favourite museums. It shows human ingenuity and determination. The site is wheelchair friendly.
  • You have to visit this fascinating museum. All the stories are inspiring and refreshing. I learned much about self sustainable living, flora and fauna of South America, the Islands and people of Polynesia and sea voyaging.
  • Came on a whim 45mins before closing. Honestly one of the best museums I've been to. Beautifully themed; clearly crafted with lots of love and dedication. Must see.
  • The amazing adventures of Thor Heyerdahl. Extremely informative but not interactive enough for today's children.

Where to stay in Oslo

A majority of Oslo's hotels and smaller accommodations cluster along Karl Johans Gate, the city's main drag connecting many of its downtown attractions. If you want something a bit more colorful than the average hotel, consider one of the many bed and breakfasts that have been cropping up in recent years. To escape the crowded streets, but still be walking distance from major sights, stay in the Frogner or Majorstuen neighborhoods near the royal palace. As you can probably guess, lodging is quite expensive in this European capital.
