The Kon-Tiki Museum, Oslo

4.4
Dedicated to one of Norway's most well-known pioneering spirits, The Kon-Tiki Museum displays the vessels, artifacts, and personal effects of Thor Heyerdahl. Heyerdahl famously set sail in 1947 on a raft from South America and traveled to Polynesia in order to reinforce his theory about pre-Columbian island colonization. Visit the museum to see the Kon-Tiki craft used on this excursion, as well as other reed boats Heyerdahl employed on later expeditions. Wander the different exhibits focused on Heyerdahl's life, his vessels, and the life and culture of the islands he visited. Don't miss the collection of more than 8,000 books--a tribute to Heyerdahl's prolific career as a scientist, researcher, and writer. • After watching the Oscar-nominated film "Kon-Tiki", I was early convinced that I would one day visit this museum. I took the trip to the Kon-Tiki Museum as part of the "Tourist in your own city" program, along with a girlfriend. I was surprised at how early good condition both balsaflåten, and sivbåten that is on display is in. To begin with, we thought this was the replicas, but it would prove that they were actually quite real! In addition to balsaflåten and sivbåten, there are many historical artifacts on display at the Museum, as well as a cave similar to the one that is on Easter Island. Here has the space been well exploited, and good story retold. All in all a special experience as I!

  • I was totally ignorant about this fantastic voyage. We ran into an American living in Oslo and he told us it was an interesting museum. My wife read the book as a kid and really wanted to see it. I loved this place and the whole adventure of Thor and his crew. Can’t wait to read the book when I get home! A really interesting museum. Crowded bus to and from was the only negative.
  • Not the first time I've been here, but still find things out each visit. Took my seven year old granddaughter this time and she was fascinated by the story and the exhibits. Thor Heyerdahl and his companions were childhood heroes of mine and I find myself slipping back to the child who dreamed of joining them crossing the Pacific or the Arabian Seas. 'Borders I have never seen one. But I have heard they exist in the minds of some people. Borders I have never seen one. But I have heard they exist in the minds of some people.
  • Very nice museum. Very helpful employees. Lots of information about thor and his journeys. Unfortunately i couldn't read alot of it because i had a inpatient toddler on my back 😁. But fortunately there was alot to see also.
  • Really amazing exhibits! I learned so much about the sailor Thor and his adventures. They have a great gift shop as well. Free with the Oslo Pass. There were exhibits, movies, artifacts, and more. There is truly something for everyone at this museum. It's also in close proximity to two others and the bus/ferry.
  • An informative exhibition of this famous archaeological raft expedition to explore how people before the age of steam might have travelled across the Pacific.
