(4/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Glimpse into the life of the founder of modern drama at The Ibsen Museum. Henrik Ibsen, one of the most performed playwrights in the world, lived here in the last 11 years of his life. Opened in 2006 on the 100th year anniversary of his death, the museum recreates the interior of the writer's final home with a mix of original furniture and replicas. Gain further insight through educational films. The museum on the ground floor contains artifacts and personal items, including Ibsen's hat collection. Upstairs, guided 30-minute tours of the apartment are offered in groups of 15. Lockers are available, and a small gift shop offers books for purchase. • The exhibition itself is well-made, but possibly only for Ibsen fans. It is interesting then maybe look at the Ibsen's apartment accessible only with the leadership to be posted. Here, you get an interesting insight into the life of the famous old Ibsen, the then most popular writer of the world really. The lead is well done, with many details, which you would otherwise not easily learn. Worthwhile!

  • Didn't know much about him. Now I do! Mostly enjoyed viewing his home...fully furnished of the period. Not busy or crowded... we were the only ones there. Then walked a few blocks to a hotel and ate.
  • The Ibsen Museum wasn't initially part of our plan for Oslo (we only had a day and a half so were really trying to pack in a lot), however, we had the Oslo Pass and some time on the Sunday morning, so...  more »

  • The people are friendly and the collection is intended to show you more about his life. Do pay the extra and get the guided tour to his flat.
  • Not very well designed. The exhibition lacks continuity and clarity while the content is quite simplified. The content of the tour was simplified to a banal degree. Leaves a slightly one dimensional impression of what was a complex man.
  • A small but complete overview of Ibsen's life, particularly his final years, when he lived in a generously-sized apartment at this location. If you're not familiar with his work, you can learn a lot here. It would be better to get at least an overview before going. That would contribute to your engagement. The museum seems newish and growing. They're trying to restore his apartment to its appearance during his time there. The tour--the only way to get in to the apartment--will definitely give you insight into the man. (Free with Oslo Pass)
  • Loved ibsen's house!
  • One of the most beautiful places I've visited. Ibsen's apartment is stunning!
