Oslo Cathedral, Oslo

3.8
Oslo Cathedral provides a serene place where you can take part in a service and light a candle. It also hosts public celebrations and royal events. The 17th-century Baroque church was restored to its original interior in 1950, on the ninth centennial of Oslo. See the authentic altarpiece with the painting of the Last Supper, the pulpit, and the christening font carved with acanthus leaves. During the restoration, the floor was covered with marble stones and brickwork, and all furnishings were refurbished. Be sure to look up and view the ceiling paintings, works by a 20th-century Norwegian artist that depict different scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. Oslo Cathedral is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Oslo Edition.

  • Built in the 17th century and is the largest church in Norway. The exterior has the typical characteristics of the Nordic churches. The Interior, however, is the result of recent renovations that make it quite anonymous. Nice altar.

  • Beautiful stained glass windows, pulpit and choir loft. Be sure to take a look at the ceiling above. Enjoy a stroll around the perimeter of the church and relax at one of the church bistros.  more »
  • Maybe because I expect from the Italian capital's Cathedral something important at least architecturally, since being Lutheran inside there may be special embellishments, but it did not happen. It's a normal Lutheran Church like many meet in Norway. Noticeable, but nothing more, frescoed ceilings. The Scepter of religious center in Norway lies in Trondheim as well you understand its Cathedral.

  • Nice Cathedral, worth paying a visit when you are in Oslo. I really liked the paintings on the walls and the ceiling.
  • Totally different from a Catholic Church. However, you feel fine and in peace.
  • It's an alright Cathedral. Looks ok, but the best thing here is that you can often see concerts at a very reasonable price. Acoustics are not great here though.
  • Nice cathedral, maybe a bit smaller than one would expect.
  • very nice and friendly staff! And a lot of public events there, check the website to get the schedules or just passing by, maybe surprise you~

Where to stay in Oslo

A majority of Oslo's hotels and smaller accommodations cluster along Karl Johans Gate, the city's main drag connecting many of its downtown attractions. If you want something a bit more colorful than the average hotel, consider one of the many bed and breakfasts that have been cropping up in recent years. To escape the crowded streets, but still be walking distance from major sights, stay in the Frogner or Majorstuen neighborhoods near the royal palace. As you can probably guess, lodging is quite expensive in this European capital.
