  • Nice museum with lots of different types of paintings explaining the development of painting techniques in Norway over time. It's not my normal type of thing (art) but it isn't too big or too wordy so...  more »
  • Nice staff and some great artwork. A bit small and at times the art seems to be unrelated... it doesn't take long to see. Easy access with the tram  more »
  • We had a day in Oslo as part of a Baltic cruise and we decided to do Oslo on our own as it is such a compact city. By accident we ended up in here as it wasn't on the itinerary we created but as time ...  more »

  • Anyone travelling to Oslo, should definitely make a stop at the national gallery. I had expected it to be larger...But given the amount of famous art that's here it's still very worth it. A student ticket is only 50 kroner which is incredibly reasonable. Edvard Munch's the Scream is housed here as well. The painting is also not allowed to leave the country, so if you're in town now's your chance!
  • One of the best art museums I have been to. Good guide that knew what she was talking about and made it interesting, beautiful pieces of art inside a wonderful building. Worth taking a trip just to see the architecture. There is also the famous "skrik" painting and many other great, original works.
  • Large variety of artists, found the fairy tale room with monster in the lake. Really enjoyable experience. The museum is wheelchair friendly.
  • A swift visit. It was great seeing a number of pieces of art work from famous Norwegian artists and brought into context how their paintings were influenced by Europe throughout the various artistic periods.
  • Free of Thursdays! Managed to get in 30 minutes before closing, so ended up rushing around. However I enjoyed the little time we spent there

Where to stay in Oslo

A majority of Oslo's hotels and smaller accommodations cluster along Karl Johans Gate, the city's main drag connecting many of its downtown attractions. If you want something a bit more colorful than the average hotel, consider one of the many bed and breakfasts that have been cropping up in recent years. To escape the crowded streets, but still be walking distance from major sights, stay in the Frogner or Majorstuen neighborhoods near the royal palace. As you can probably guess, lodging is quite expensive in this European capital.
