Hovedoya, Oslo
(4.5/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
A small island off the coast, Hovedoya offers lush scenery and natural beauty, as well as many outdoor and cultural activities. Hike through the island's nature reserve to see a variety of plants and animals. Go swimming on the west side of the island, where you'll find two beaches and good swimming spots. Check out the cannon batteries and gunpowder depots that remain from 1808, during the period that the Norwegian army owned the island. Be sure to stop by the ruins of Hovedøya Abbey, the Cistercian monastery built in 1147. You can hop on boat route line 92 or 93 leaving from Vippetangen to reach the site. • Easily accessible Island recommended by a local. The Norwegians bring their mobile BBQ and spend the day. For tourists it is nice too. You can lunch in the on-site restaurant, allow children to play on and between the ruins and finally enjoy the Sun or a dip in finally more hot water in Brittany... can be 18 degrees Celsius. A nice surprise.

  • We went down there with the boats that are part of the city's public transport. Just for the boat ride, already worth it ... but the island is fantastic! very green, the ruins of the monastery, the ancient Fort with cannons, even the beach ... very cool!
