Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web
A small island off the coast, Hovedoya offers lush scenery and natural beauty, as well as many outdoor and cultural activities. Hike through the island's nature reserve to see a variety of plants and animals. Go swimming on the west side of the island, where you'll find two beaches and good swimming spots. Check out the cannon batteries and gunpowder depots that remain from 1808, during the period that the Norwegian army owned the island. Be sure to stop by the ruins of Hovedøya Abbey, the Cistercian monastery built in 1147. You can hop on boat route line 92 or 93 leaving from Vippetangen to reach the site. See Hovedoya and all Oslo has to offer by arranging your trip with our Oslo vacation builder.

  • With the boat running every 30 minutes and free with the travel card, this is an escape from Oslo, but just a lonely place Good for water related activities
  • The ferry goes here every hour during the day from pier 4 next to the city hall (Radhuset) and it's definitely worth of spending some time here. I recommend to buy 24 hours ticket for public transport...  read more »
  • The main island is a great destination in Oslo. Here, a swim, sunbathe, take a walk, sit in a café, see art exhibitions and play football or crocket. The island is rampant, and it is a delight to walk here. The Abbey ruins are popular to climb on for the kids! No summer without a trip to the main island!
