Hovedoya, Oslo

4.3
#6 of 20 in Nature in Oslo
A small island off the coast, Hovedoya offers lush scenery and natural beauty, as well as many outdoor and cultural activities. Hike through the island's nature reserve to see a variety of plants and animals. Go swimming on the west side of the island, where you'll find two beaches and good swimming spots. Check out the cannon batteries and gunpowder depots that remain from 1808, during the period that the Norwegian army owned the island. Be sure to stop by the ruins of Hovedøya Abbey, the Cistercian monastery built in 1147. You can hop on boat route line 92 or 93 leaving from Vippetangen to reach the site. • To go on the ferry in front at Aker brygge, and to go off on the peaceful main island is magical. Lovely, relaxed atmosphere. Here you will find both exciting history and relaxing beach life. Nice cafe if you want it, or bring something good from the city and create your own picnic. Has been over many times, and comes to gelt go back again.

  • My wife and I took the boat trip to Hovedoya on our day trip to the islands in the Oslo fjord. We first explored the monastery ruins and then walked one of the trails through the woods to the small be...  more »
  • Taking the boat out to see Hovedøya is definitely worth it in the summer. There’s a small beach, some ruins and nice views of both the Oslo fjord and part of Oslo’s skyline.  more »

  • Only minutes away from the City center with the boat service from Rådhusplassen. Hovedøya is a great place for a break from the city. Large enough to spend some time walking, follow the path around the island. The island is a nature reserve with plants that are endemic for the area. Places for picnic and swim. Also a place for simple food and drinkgs open during the season. Central on the island is a great lawn for playing sports or let your kids run. It is popular place, on weekends during summer it might be some waiting time for the boat.
  • This is an uninhabited island, closest to Oslo. There is a #Ruter ferry service from Aker Brygge, which means that if you, as a tourist, have purchased a daily #Ruter ticket for the bus, tram and metro services in Oslo, you can hop on the ferry using the same ticket. The island has nice beaches that offer the chance for relaxation and swimming on sunny days.
  • Terrific island with awesome weather and breathtaking views.
