Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo

3.6
#13 of 64 in Museums in Oslo
Discover one of the most significant private collections of post-war and contemporary art in Northern Europe at Astrup Fearnley Museum. The permanent collection, once dominated by paintings and sculptures by American and European artists, now features art from India, Japan, China, and Brazil as well. The museum's three pavilions sit against the waterfront backdrop in a neighborhood that used to house docks and shipyards. Notice how the maritime theme is reflected in a sail-shaped glass roof and mast-like steel columns. The museum also features strange works, like a cow split in half and submerged in formaldehyde by controversial British artist Damian Hurst. • To visit this Museum for its architectural beauty (architect is Renzo Piano) but I did not appreciate the very violent permanent collection

  • In my opinion this is the "real" Museum of contemporary art in Oslo, since you have the official name I found poor quality (to put it kindly). When I visited there was a temporary exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, of remarkable quality. Its location is central, at one end of the pier, and near one of the areas of shopping and touristic restoration.

Where to stay in Oslo

A majority of Oslo's hotels and smaller accommodations cluster along Karl Johans Gate, the city's main drag connecting many of its downtown attractions. If you want something a bit more colorful than the average hotel, consider one of the many bed and breakfasts that have been cropping up in recent years. To escape the crowded streets, but still be walking distance from major sights, stay in the Frogner or Majorstuen neighborhoods near the royal palace. As you can probably guess, lodging is quite expensive in this European capital.
