Aker Brygge, Oslo

4.4
#1 of 15 in Shopping in Oslo
Stretching along one of the arms of the Oslo Fjord in the location of a former shipyard, Aker Brygge creates a melting pot where business people, artists, musicians, and celebrities meet and mingle. Several workshop halls of the 19th-century shipyard have been turned into shopping areas with restaurants, art galleries, and a cinema, creating a city-within-a-city. Shop, have a drink, or taste some fresh seafood at the restaurants on the boats by the dock. A walk along the waterfront, with its mixture of old buildings and modern architecture, gives a general view into the history of Norwegian shipbuilding. Visit one of the small harbors, hop on a boat, and take a ride to one of the nearby islands. The area hosts several festivals. Enjoyed the seaside Oslo with many nice restaurants and shops. Spent five hours here, just strolling around and having dinner.  more »

Exit City Hall or go around it at the rear and you come face to face with a vast promenade which used to be a ship yard but now turned into a f&b and shopping area ringed with very nice apartments! It...  more »

Really nice neighborhood that gives the best of itself in the evening as the sun set and the lights make everything more impressive. Super recommended for a leisurely stroll or to drink and eat something. prices permitting.

Lovely modern area packed with bars and restaurants. Similar to some areas of the docklands in London, repurposing old brick buildings for upscale condos, flats and restaurants. Ends with the interesting modern arts museum, in itself a good piece of modern architecture, at least in my lay understanding of it.

Where to stay in Oslo

A majority of Oslo's hotels and smaller accommodations cluster along Karl Johans Gate, the city's main drag connecting many of its downtown attractions. If you want something a bit more colorful than the average hotel, consider one of the many bed and breakfasts that have been cropping up in recent years. To escape the crowded streets, but still be walking distance from major sights, stay in the Frogner or Majorstuen neighborhoods near the royal palace. As you can probably guess, lodging is quite expensive in this European capital.
