Briksdalsbreen, Olden

#3 of 31 in Outdoors in Sogn og Fjordane
Briksdalsbreen is one of the most accessible and best known arms of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Briksdalsbreen is located in the municipality of Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The glacier lies on the north side of the Jostedalsbreen, in Briksdalen which is located at the end of the Oldedalen valley, about south of the village of Olden. It is located inside Jostedalsbreen National Park. Briksdalsbreen terminates in a small glacial lake, Briksdalsbrevatnet, which lies above sea level. The size of Briksdalsbreen depends not only on temperature, but is also strongly affected by precipitation. Measurements since 1900 show small changes in the first decades, with advances in the glacier front in 1910 and 1929. In the period from 1934 to 1951 the glacier receded by, exposing the glacial lake. In the period from 1967 until 1997 the glacier expanded by and covered the whole lake, with the glacier front ending at the lake outlet. The glacier attracted international attention in the 1990s, as it was growing at a time when other European glaciers were in decline. After the year 2000, the glacier once again receded. In 2004 it had receded to behind the lake outlet and in 2007 the glacier front was on dry land behind the lake. In this regard, its position approximated the situation in the 1960s. However, glaciologists speculate that the size of the glacier was at its smallest since the 13th century.

We did this hike organized by costa crociere. A truly unique experience. We arrived by bus at the beginning of the walk which passes through spectacular places, imposing waterfalls (bring your raincoats because otherwise you'll wet for splashing!!!). In an hour you arrive comfortably to the half with stops for pictures. There is an initial part more difficult, then a flat part towards the glacier. For those who can't make it to walk there are trolls that lead until 10 minutes from the goal. A word of advice: don't take the tours organized by the ships: the harbour there's a bus that takes you to the trailhead and awaits the return by spending enormously less!

Wasn't disappointed with the glazier. Part steep but mainly a gradual climb up if not going by troll car. Get a sense of being pretty close to the blueish ice perky top. Worth the walk. Toilet up top ...  more »

This glacier is an arm of the Jostedalsbreen glacier the largest glacier of continental Europe. The walk is easy but if you are mountain enthusiasts or walkers some solitaire games you might dislike the crowded path and style a bit touristy. The view is definitely worth with its waterfalls and fascinating sights. The glacier can be reached (Although physically not fair) in less than an hour's walk is not binding. A shuttle service with car (golf sort) also with 25 euros per person door almost at target who doesn't feel like (or may not) walk. It is a place that definitely deserves a visit however I was also with the curiosity to explore some other path that leads to another arm of this glacier so impressive (the Jostedalsbreen)
