Knivskjellodden or Knivskjelodden is a peninsula located in Nordkapp Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It is the northernmost point on the island of Magerøya in Northern Norway. It is sometimes considered the northernmost point of the entire continent of Europe. The nearby Kinnarodden on the Nordkinn Peninsula is the northernmost point on the mainland. The northernmost point of the country Norway is in fact Rossøya, in Svalbard, far north.
Knivskjellodden can be reached only get on foot, after 9km long hike from a parking near the European route E69 highway, 6km south of North Cape.
Travel agencies that organize trips for unconscious tourists often advertise the North Cape as the northern extremity of Europe, but this is not true as the Knivskjellodden is 1,450 meters more north.

  • We ventured on a cloudy august day... Parking is on the road leading to Nordkapp. left the machine we start walking following the orange T's and the piles of sassi. the trail is recognized by the footsteps of other travelers... We pass riversciattoli mountains etc After about 2 hours it starts to rain undaunted we decide to continue on a decidedly muddy ground at times marsh, arrived at the beach we find ourselves in front of a wall of smooth rocks and made slippery by the flow of the Continuous water ... (insured risk of falls ) Late in the evening the fog drops and with the rain the trail nn you can see more... be very careful are about 20 km for 4/5 hours. Recommended waterproof clothing and high hiking shoes. Don't do with the rain ...

  • From the parking (6km before Nordkapp) it’s fairly flat pathway (well marked, keep an eye open for cairns and the red “T” when along the shoreline), then the path drops to the sea, which is just as we...  more »
  • The opportunity to reach the northernmost point of Europe is an obvious temptation for a real tourist. Probably because it just is. However, this is not really an easy walk. And the weather can also be challenging, which we unfortunately experienced. The walk we start "lightly, easily and pleasantly", almost flat though but quite consistently down. Then the descent will be increasingly sloped. Along the way we pass a little bogatisk, several streams. In this part there are no terrain difficulties, but remember that all these descences will turn into an approach and then if we already have in the legs a dozen kilometers. The last passage of the trail descending almost to the sea level, is relatively the most steep although still technically completely easy. However, the approach will be tedious. From here to the destination is already relatively close but this section of the route I mention the worst. The mist turned into a harassing, and the path partly leads to sloped stone plates. When they are wet they become unpleasantly slippery. I was a spectacular, albeit utterly harmless fall. The reward was the absence of any views, and a book (workbook) to which you can no longer enter because it was completely filled. If you want to leave a trace, take a business card or a piece of paper. We were added to the loose cards. Then there was only a return: a Tedier road uphill, in ever more powerful rain. At the end of the glacial wind he striped his breath and jamed the rain, which was everywhere he was inked, it was really unpleasantly, especially as for the first half of August. The whole route in these conditions, and we have already a few years after the fifty and we are not particularly prepared condition took us (the stopwatch turned on and turned off in the car in the parking lot) 6 hours. 12 min. In the package the big satisfaction that it was.

  • I consider myself to be fairly active. I love walking and generally walk for an hour or so a day. Beware, this is not an easy walk, even in summer. The way is very exposed, we had a horrible (arctic) head-wind for the entire 4 hour walk back. There are no good places to stop and enjoy a picnic along the way that are sheltered from the conditions. Also the walk isn't flat at all. You are either walking on stones, through frozen lakes or up/down hills the entire way. When we made it back to the car park I was soo exhausted I had to drive right infront of the highway toilets as it hurt me to walk up narrow steps. Ten people did the walk on the day we did it and no-one did it the day before due to adverse conditions. This is not for the faint hearted by a truly memorable experience for those who do! Good luck! :)
  • If you live on the European mainland you can't get any more northerly than this. That little finger of rock that I'm pointing to is the genuine most northerly point of Europe. It's an 18 km round trip to walk there and back but well worth it. Most people visit the tourist centre at Nordkapp halle thinking that they're at the most northerly point, but this is the genuine article. As an added bonus there are no bus loads of geriatric tourists who take the obligatory photo of Globus, stand in slack jawed amazement at the view of the midnight sun and buy souvenirs from the gift shop.
  • A serene place to rest after a moderate trek.
  • The most northerly point in Europe, accessible by a 9km walk (one way) but it's worth it. Wonderful place.

  • The real northernmost point in Europe. Farther out than the Nordkapp globe with the rough. About 18kmnhike there and back. Rocky, Muddy and a hill near the end. The Promenade. You can see the Globe and the cliff Nediques, when you stand on the promontory.
