Borgund Stave Church, Laerdal Municipality
(4.8/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Built around 1180, Borgund Stave Church serves as Norway's best-preserved example of a medieval stave church. The name of this type of church originates from the its distinct architecture made up of vertical wooden boards, called staves. Notice the mix between Viking influence and early Christian symbolism, like the dragon carvings on the roof and the cross above the entrance. Keep an eye out for ancient runes written along the walls. Enter the church to view the ornate wooden carvings within, and then head to the visitor center to see exhibits related to the history of stave churches in Norway. You'll pay a small fee to see outside exhibits. Put Borgund Stave Church into our Laerdal Municipality trip itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • a great museum, where you can obtain information about the history of the stave church of Borgund. But also stave churches in general. Very informative! Furthermore, a souvenir shop is also included. And toilets present, which are very clean by the way. Friendly staff. Museum is not really big, but big enough. We went here for about 30-45 minutes.
  • Stave (wooden in Norwegian) churches have their own design and character. This particular one, stands since 1180 AD and is considered as the most authentic among churches of this style. If you are nearby do not miss it. Beautiful and impressive waits to be visited and photographed. Most recommended.
  • Wooden church with an original design. The infocentre near the church offers good coffee, restrooms and souvenir shop.
  • Gorgeous example of Stave Church building from cir. 1100. Not to be missed. Call ahead for a tour or be sure it is open so you can get inside.
  • One of the best stave church in Norway
