Borgund Stave Church, Laerdal Municipality

Built around 1180, Borgund Stave Church serves as Norway's best-preserved example of a medieval stave church. The name of this type of church originates from the its distinct architecture made up of vertical wooden boards, called staves. Notice the mix between Viking influence and early Christian symbolism, like the dragon carvings on the roof and the cross above the entrance. Keep an eye out for ancient runes written along the walls. Enter the church to view the ornate wooden carvings within, and then head to the visitor center to see exhibits related to the history of stave churches in Norway. You'll pay a small fee to see outside exhibits. Arrange your visit to Borgund Stave Church and discover more family-friendly attractions in Flam using our Flam trip itinerary tool .

  • Good overall balance in Norway starvechurch, from the roof to the HEA of golstvechurch surely growing Dragon decorations can be open-air museum in Oslo and built than the apparent interest pretty staff. Japan-language brochure provides a detailed commentary is interesting. On the other hand only altar paintings about interior decorating. I think, here should come in the the purpose seems to be the Vikings look to enjoy the amazing decorations inside what is starvechurch other.

  • Totally awesome in every way possible. I am a historian and stave churches are my favorite things. Middle age in itself is of great interest to me. Borgund is a huge and wonderful to see and experience. Creeds to fortidsminneforeningen ❤ ️

  • Quietly nestled in the wilderness of presence of a church. Was I would be feeling. Visitor Center in fact, abounds in many vehicles, and tourists in the parking lot. I feel that wooden church is impressive from the outside, so personally while away too good?.

  • Outside look of the church is very impressive. In reality the church was smaller than I expected. Inside the church you will see some woodcraft, but in my opinion the entree asked is way too much
  • A must stop if you are in the area! Not worth paying to go inside though, but make sure to walk through the museum in the reception center. Also a great cafe there that's perfect for a quick stop. Clean restrooms and small gift shop.
  • Beautiful church in a beautiful setting, not as big as you would think.... tad expensive, I didn't go inside as it was busy and for £9 to me was a lot of money.
  • Amazing old church, easy to find and walk nearby. It was a little stop in our road trip to bergen.
  • One of the few remaining typical Norwegian wooden church. Really nice!
