Borgund Stave Church, Laerdal Municipality

Built around 1180, Borgund Stave Church serves as Norway's best-preserved example of a medieval stave church. The name of this type of church originates from the its distinct architecture made up of vertical wooden boards, called staves. Notice the mix between Viking influence and early Christian symbolism, like the dragon carvings on the roof and the cross above the entrance. Keep an eye out for ancient runes written along the walls. Enter the church to view the ornate wooden carvings within, and then head to the visitor center to see exhibits related to the history of stave churches in Norway. You'll pay a small fee to see outside exhibits. • A beautiful 12th century church made completely of wood. A good place to stop and visit. There is a visitor centre just across the road with souvenir shop, toilets and an exhibition showings some finds of the church and its history.
  • Beautiful church in a lovely place full of history. Details on the church shows the clear inspiration from the norse mythology. This is a great place to stop for a visit, and if you have the time you should walk King Sverres trail or Vindhella road that passes by near the church.
  • Outside look of the church is very impressive. In reality the church was smaller than I expected. Inside the church you will see some woodcraft, but in my opinion the entree asked is way too much
  • A must stop if you are in the area! Not worth paying to go inside though, but make sure to walk through the museum in the reception center. Also a great cafe there that's perfect for a quick stop. Clean restrooms and small gift shop.
  • Amazing old church, easy to find and walk nearby. It was a little stop in our road trip to bergen.
