Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), Halden
(4.8/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
At Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), view the remaining fortifications of the hilltop walled city that has played an important role in Norwegian military history. Built in 1661, the fortress was often besieged but never defeated, which is a point of pride for Halden residents. Most notably, Swedish king Charles XII was shot here in 1718. Climb the ramparts for great views over Halden, the harbor, and the fjord running between Norway and Sweden. Visit the museum within the walls, which displays various political and military history exhibits. You'll find various eateries inside. Keep an eye on small children, as there are no railings or ropes guarding the drop-offs. • A fortification that has it all., especially in the Fascinating History of our relationship to the Swedes, beautiful location, great and varying nature. Views of the city and the fjord is fabulous. The site is huge, and you can wander around for hours. There are several museums and places to eat in the area. Guiding in the summer. The fortress is used summer and winter to a variety of events.

  • surely worth a visit if you are in Halden. The Fortress is right on top of the hill and can be reached by walking directly from town. Nice place with a lot of green quite places around.
  • The perfect relaxation with lots of history under your feet. See the city below you both day and night. A great setting to both tour, training and rest.
