Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), Halden
Categories: Historic Sites, Military Facilities, Tourist Spots
At Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), view the remaining fortifications of the hilltop walled city that has played an important role in Norwegian military history. Built in 1661, the fortress was often besieged but never defeated, which is a point of pride for Halden residents. Most notably, Swedish king Charles XII was shot here in 1718. Climb the ramparts for great views over Halden, the harbor, and the fjord running between Norway and Sweden. Visit the museum within the walls, which displays various political and military history exhibits. You'll find various eateries inside. Keep an eye on small children, as there are no railings or ropes guarding the drop-offs.
