#1 of 17 in Things to do in Bronnoy Municipality
Torghatten is a granite mountain on Torget island in Brønnøy municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is known for its characteristic hole, or natural tunnel, through its center. It is possible to walk up to the tunnel on a well-prepared path, and through it on a natural path.On 6 May 1988, Widerøe Flight 710 from Namsos to Brønnøysund crashed into the side of the mountain, and all the 36 passengers and crew died.TunnelAccording to legend, the hole was made by the troll Hestmannen while he was chasing the beautiful girl Lekamøya. As the troll realized he would not get the girl, he released an arrow to kill her, but the troll-king of Sømna threw his hat into the arrow's path to save her. The hat turned into the mountain with a hole in the middle. Also, Felice Vinci has linked the legends about Torghatten to the Homeric myth of Polyphemus. The tunnel is long, wide, and high. It was formed during the Scandinavian ice age. Ice and water eroded the looser rocks, while the harder ones in the mountain top have resisted erosion.Media gallery

  • Takes about 20 min to go up to the hole in the mountain. Should have good shoes and clothing that is windproof as there is a lot of wind in the hole. Should go through the hole and then the ev back the same way. By getting down on the other side using a about 1 hour down. The best view when the sun goes down-but be careful not to go down too late when it gets dark.

  • Bra tilrettelagt tursti, både for tur/retur, rundtur og topptur. Godt opparbeidede stier.
  • Very nice place, but don't do the trip in full motorcycle outfit... unless you have a professional atheles abilities... Just saying :-)
  • You can see and walk straight through the mountain!
  • And special place to go hiking. You are in about 20 minutes to top hiked (about 130 metres ascent). You can take the same way back, but also continue and then back along the water, which is about 2 kilometers, the first piece, then plane.

  • Great ride, steep but okay on the shortest route as it is also landscaped stairs. The easiest way is to walk this back down, as it is steeper to go back/other side down, but if you're not too wobbly so is it to recommend:-D
