Categories: Mountains, Geologic Formations, Nature & Parks
Torghatten is a granite mountain on Torget island in Brønnøy municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is known for its characteristic hole, or natural tunnel, through its center. It is possible to walk up to the tunnel on a well-prepared path, and through it on a natural path.On 6 May 1988, Widerøe Flight 710 from Namsos to Brønnøysund crashed into the side of the mountain, and all the 36 passengers and crew died.TunnelAccording to legend, the hole was made by the troll Hestmannen while he was chasing the beautiful girl Lekamøya. As the troll realized he would not get the girl, he released an arrow to kill her, but the troll-king of Sømna threw his hat into the arrow's path to save her. The hat turned into the mountain with a hole in the middle. Also, Felice Vinci has linked the legends about Torghatten to the Homeric myth of Polyphemus. The tunnel is long, wide, and high. It was formed during the Scandinavian ice age. Ice and water eroded the looser rocks, while the harder ones in the mountain top have resisted erosion.Media galleryUse our Bronnoysund tourist route planner to add Torghatten and other attractions to your Bronnoysund vacation plans.

Hike from the parking lot near the camping took their 20 minutes, and it's pretty steep at the end. Yet fully affordable on an evening walk. It is inside the hole to use time, if you want to take pictures. Inside the hole is it accessible with stairs for easier access to the opposite end. Started the trip at 20:45 on the 20th. July, and were good and lucky with the weather. Got to experience a gorgeous midsummer sunset and fight views from the hole. In the strong sommervarme's evening stroll to recommend, but strong sommervarme is a rarity in the area.show original

It is only a short climb to the hole (< 1km). The trail is relatively well developed, so that you do not necessarily need walking shoes, flip flops are also not to recommend :-) In the cave itself, wooden stairs with railings are available, so that you also there quite easily ahead. Children are determined on the way have their fun. However as always on signs warned of falling rocks, so entry at your own risk.show original

It is only 800 meters to go up to the hole. You should have good Footwear when it's a bit rough to go with pebbly and a little klyving. Tremendous view when coming up. You can go through the hole (160 metres) and see the views of the other side. It is, if possible, even more spectacular.
