Saltstraumen, Bodo
(4.3/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web)
Saltstraumen represents a narrow strait with the strongest tidal current in the world, which makes it popular among divers and anglers. The current produces maelstroms and whirlpools up to 10 m (33 ft) in diameter and 5 m (16 ft) deep. Walk up to the bridge to see the foaming stream from above, or descend to the waterfront to view it up close. The water swarms with various species of fish like cod, halibut, and coalfish, the regional specialty. You can fish from the bridge, the shore, or a boat. • Nice but nothing much to experience. It was a 45 min trip there from town and have to look out on the schedule for buses to pick up as it is at a rather secluded area.
  • Saltstraumen is an amazing sight. But if you really want to watch it at its most spectacular you have to check the tide timetable on the web. You can watch it at its strongest every sixth hour. But in...  more »
  • On the way to the North, this stop is a "must"! Both flood and ebb, the amount of water, which is pressed by the narrowness of the bridge, is incomparable. Absolute silence up to thunderous noise. If you're lucky, even the weather cooperates and has almost perfect conditions of photo. We spent hours there. A wonderful place to chill out.

  • Who is in the area should take a little trip to the strongest tidal current in the world. You will observe here various vortex at high tide. Through our schedule, we came to the tide, but even then we were able to observe some strudel.
