Ulriken, Bergen

4.7
#2 of 16 in Parks in Bergen
Rising imposingly above Bergen, Ulriken stands as the highest of the seven mountains ringing the city. Make your way to the top, 643 m (2,110 ft) above sea level, for a sweeping view over the city, its harbor, and the surrounding mountains. Ascend via the network of rugged mountain trails or by taking the cable car that runs from the city center to the peak. Alternatively, hop aboard a shuttle bus from Bergen, which departs from the city's tourist information office. Once you arrive at the top, take advantage of the free telescopes to get a closer view of the landscape. • You'll go up in a jiff! And you can walk down by foot since there are several paths with different difficulty levels. I saw families going up! Down should be a piece of cake. Nice to get a good cup of...  more »
  • When we're standing in front of "cable car" goes up, take the path on the right and do you even. 1 h 30 of climb but that gives satisfaction without name upon arrival!

  • After having had a little problem with the parking lot, so we started the trip up to Ulriken. We hit pretty quickly on the new trail being built of nepalesere. The stairs are frequently used, but lately the party up is not yet ready to use. View from the top a formidable. Took a bowl and tuslet down a different path. It goes of course also possible to use the path.

  • easy hike, but steep. would recommend to go the steep but short way up and the long way down, its pretty too. gorgeous view from the top. must do if you're in bergen
  • We took the cable car up to Ulriken and then hiked Vidden to Floyen and took the cable car back down. The views at the top are great, but they really can't compare to the views along Vidden while hiking. We saw a lot of sheep along the trail too! The trail wasn't very well marked at the very beginning near Ulriken and we went the wrong way for a bit. Once we got past the first part and on the right path, the trail was very well marked the rest of the way. The hike was about 8 miles, but we ended up hiking closer to 10 with our getting lost at the beginning. The trail wasn't that difficult. It was mostly flat with just a little up and down, but it was so wet. By halfway through the hike we gave up on trying to keep our feet dry and just gave in to the fact that they were going to be soggy for the rest of the hike. The views were spectacular the entire time and I would highly recommend the hike! Make sure to give yourself enough time. It took us about 7 hours with getting lost for about an hour. We got to Floyen right as the sun was setting which was a great view.
  • Fantastic view. If you don't want to spend a lot of money you can take a bus from olav kyrresgate to the hospital bus stop (Haukeland N) and walk from there. I'd highly recommend hiking to the top instead of taking the gondola. The stairs will drain you but it is worth it.
  • It is very nice. Go here through Floyen. In the mist. It's a magical trip. :)
  • Amazing hike up to Ulriken from the Montana bus stop (you can take the 12 bus from Bergen, but make sure you get your ticket from the kiosk - tickets on the bus are double the price). The walk up to Ulriken is steep but beautiful -- the lamb sausage at the restaurant at the top is fabulous! Follow the Vidden path (very well-marked, just follow the signs and cairns all the way) to Floyen. People say it takes about 5 hours but it took me and my partner 3.5 hours. We are experienced hikers and it was a sunny day. The path is muddy and would be much slower in the rain. Highly recommend this hike. Gorgeous views!!

Where to stay in Bergen

As a major Norwegian city, Bergen offers accommodations--and just about everything else--at a high price. Try to stay in the picturesque Bryggen wharf area near the fish market, or in the city center. If you’re looking for lively nightlife, check out rooms close to the city’s university. To find less-expensive lodging, search for hostels in the city center and campsites just out of town. Alternatively, live like a local by staying in a small guesthouse.
