Discover what life was like for the Hanseatic merchants of Bergen at Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene. Housed in a waterfront wooden warehouse from 1702, the museum covers the period when the Hanseatic League ruled the city. Take a step back in time and walk through the three-story museum's replicated authentic trading room, offices, sleeping quarters, and kitchen. Notice the small beds, low ceilings, and the smell of salted cod to get a taste of what a merchant's everyday life was like, and view relevant art work from the period. Loved the uneven floors! Like being in a pirate ship. Cool old building and even the young kids enjoyed doing the quiz. The information was imparted in writing which is a bit monotonous. Would have be...  more »

Small but well preserved little museum showing how the early settlers of Bergen were conducting their business in this little home. Shows some nifty inventions of those days and how they spent their time working and sleeping there. Got a bundle deal of entry to 3 museums (Hanseatic, fishery) including this, plus a bus that takes you around them.

A very interesting walkthrough. Very much enjoyed the experience. Definitely not up there on the fun or engaging necessarily, but interesting nevertheless.

+ Interesting museum, very cold inside which adds to the experience. + Friendly staff. - Quite small, got through it all in less than an hour, - Expensive for what it is.. overall it was interesting but underwhelming.

lovely piece of building that still capture the essence of history of Bergen. we were lucky enough to have a guide explaining the interesting stories around the intricate details of the building. if you have the chance, do ask for a guide or join a guided tour, it offers much more than the plain displays of the content.

Where to stay in Bergen

As a major Norwegian city, Bergen offers accommodations--and just about everything else--at a high price. Try to stay in the picturesque Bryggen wharf area near the fish market, or in the city center. If you’re looking for lively nightlife, check out rooms close to the city’s university. To find less-expensive lodging, search for hostels in the city center and campsites just out of town. Alternatively, live like a local by staying in a small guesthouse.
