Bryggens Museum - Bymuseet i Bergen, Bergen
Categories: History Museums, Specialty Museums, Museums
Constructed over the remains of the first settlement at Bryggen, Bryggens Museum - Bymuseet i Bergen introduces visitors to everyday life in the harbor during medieval times. Parts of the dock were destroyed by fire in 1955, and excavations at that time revealed a number of objects that offer insights into trade, shipping, and medieval crafts. Take a walk through Bryggen's past, which starts at the museum and continues through historical alleys and courtyards lined with old wooden buildings, all the way to the Hanseatic Museum. The oldest buildings date back to the 12th century. Check out the exhibit on runes and the Viking boat. Also still clear remnants of beams, which exactly represent the construction of the "wood Foundation" to the building of a House. You can explore the Museum alone. The boards are in Norwegian and English. You can take a tour to complete. The illumination of exhibits, the caption of the panels with the explanations is suboptimal. Lots of wonderful information about the Hanseatic League and what it was like back in the day in Bergen. I found it fascinating.
The museum itself is a little dated but do the guided tour for 120 NOK. They do a tour in english at 11 and 12. The tour takes you through Bryggen Museum, Bryggen itself and the Hanseatic Museum in 1,5 hours. Ticket price for both museums included.
They've done a great job of allowing us to visit Bergen's past "on site". All the information was clear to us as an English speaking couple. It was esecially good to be there to see the Runes and Rune Sticks so clearly explained.
A great place to learn a about Bergen back in the day. Nice price for a guided tour.
