Bryggens Museum, Bergen

3.9
#5 of 37 in Museums in Bergen
Constructed over the remains of the first settlement at Bryggen, Bryggens Museum introduces visitors to everyday life in the harbor during medieval times. Parts of the dock were destroyed by fire in 1955, and excavations at that time revealed a number of objects that offer insights into trade, shipping, and medieval crafts. Take a walk through Bryggen's past, which starts at the museum and continues through historical alleys and courtyards lined with old wooden buildings, all the way to the Hanseatic Museum. The oldest buildings date back to the 12th century. Check out the exhibit on runes and the Viking boat. • This museum is essential for understanding the culture, the society's formation and evolution of the Norwegian people since its inception, ranging from construction, economy and customs of the people. Essential if you want to understand a little of this people and your country.

  • The Bryggen is the most famous of Bergen, narrow lanes and colorful as all wooden houses of little quarter. A world heritage site by Unesco--although, in my opinion, became Bergen Heritage businesses.

  • A world class exhibit of Norwegian Medieval church art. Well worth the walk up the hill. There are other exhibits, but it is the medieval that stands out. great collection of art from stave churches.
  • It was all right, but smaller than expected. Some of the exhibits look like they need updating (e. g. the very washed out photos). The length and thoroughness of explanations in English seems to be completely random. Knowledge of Norwegian is recommended!
  • Great way to learn about Bergen and to get a quick overview of the Hanseatic community. The best part was the temporary exhibit "where do hail from?" about the origins and genetic research on skeletons found on archeological excavations
  • History of the area downstairs, other exhibitions upstairs. Some are a little out of date, but offer a quick introduction to the area and customs. Coffee shop is no frills, but cheaper than most in the area.
  • Immersion and authenticity are real strong points here. I really like that even the tiniest details of the lives lived in Bergen and Bryggen are shown here.

Where to stay in Bergen

As a major Norwegian city, Bergen offers accommodations--and just about everything else--at a high price. Try to stay in the picturesque Bryggen wharf area near the fish market, or in the city center. If you’re looking for lively nightlife, check out rooms close to the city’s university. To find less-expensive lodging, search for hostels in the city center and campsites just out of town. Alternatively, live like a local by staying in a small guesthouse.
