Kvernes Stave Church, Averoy Municipality
(4.4/5 based on 25+ reviews on the web)
Kvernes Stave Church is a historic stave church located in Averøy Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The old church sits along the Kvernesfjorden in the village of Kvernes, just to the north of the Kvernes Church, the present church for the parish. The stave church was probably built during the first half of the 14th century. In 1894, it was put up for sale and was bought by a group of individuals who donated it as a gift to Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments. The church is a single-nave church of the "Møre"-type, characterized by central posts in the external wall and crossbeams. The small nave measures only 16by and the choir is only 7by, making it one of the smallest stave churches in existence. When the church was rebuilt in 1633, the front door was moved from the nave's west side to the south side. In 1776 it was rebuilt, and again in 1810 to add a tower.Media gallery

  • Opening hours: 20 until Aug 17 11:00 to 17:00 cost: adults NOK 50, children up to 16 years free. We were on the Atlantic road and have decided to call us about the Fv255. What was an excellent choice. The gravel road with limited admission leads through a very beautiful area on a small hill. Upon arrival from Kvernes stave church, we have visited the old cemetery and made a tour to the churches of old and new. There are more beautiful, bigger and older stave churches in Norway. The supports of the outer skin are special at Kvernes stave church. A visit to the new Church is free of charge.

  • A small wooden church in the village of Kvernes (on Overoya). Very simple on the outside, but interesting decorated inside. Quite beautiful ceiling. According to the booklet, built in the 14th century. Very nice location and view of the Kvernesf′ord.
