Rallarvegen, Aurland Municipality

4.8
#4 of 12 in Trails in Sogn og Fjordane
The popular bicycle road Rallarvegen takes you through a highland area passing glaciers, streams, lakes, forests, a goat farm, and a series of waterfalls. It dates back some hundred years, when it served to transport men and materials for the Oslo-Bergen Railway Line. Start at 1,000 m (3,280 ft) above sea level, ascend an additional 350 m (1,148 ft), and then start your descent back to the fjords. The unpaved road is mostly gravel with some smaller stony parts, and very steep at times. Ride carefully, since parts of the road remain in bad condition, and the entire way largely unsecured. Note that it can get quite crowded on weekends. We had a wonderful day cycling through all weather conditions. Amazing landscapes and an absolute must for visitors to this area.  more »

After having cycled Rallarvegen in 2002 with the tongue on the lower button holes to variety of train to Upsete and clear it, with 2-minute margin, one would finally get the ts with part of the family again 14 years later, IG could use the time needed. And what a trip it was! After a bit of start problems first day the 2 1/2 km from Haugastøl to Finse, with a magical stay at Finsehytta, was day 2 from Finse to Flåm a triumph without equal. Good weather, kids in the toppslag and bikes that's rolled our way ' was a thrilled and effervescent bunch who in the early afternoon reached the Flam. And the decision was taken there and then, the next year (2017), I take with me a bunch of mates and running the trip again! For this is the turenes trip in Norway (along with the Aurland). Is strongly recommended to all, both families, single people and groups of friends.

By the remaining snow was the complete trip not possible. We therefore chose not to take the train but the trip in both directions with the bicycle. The road from Haugastol rising to Finnish. On the way to get beautiful panoramas. As we approached, more and more Finnish snow fields (the road was completely free). In Finnish itself was almost completely snowed under. Here we made a small walk to one of the nearby glaciers. You can feel free to leave cycling to the station or to the hytta. The way back is a lot less tiring as that especially downhill runs. Too bad the weather did not help, on the way back we had a little bit too much rain.
