Create an itinerary including Jugendstilsenteret and Kunstmuseet Kube
After a major fire in 1904 in Alesund, the entire town was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style, which was prevalent at the time. Jugendstilsenteret and Kunstmuseet Kube seeks to preserve this architectural heritage. Architect Hagbarth Schytte-Berg designed the building, which was constructed between 1905 and 1907 and originally housed a pharmacy with the pharmacist's apartment above it. The exhibit consists of three floors of Norwegian Art Nouveau pieces and multimedia displays of craftsmanship and architecture. Stop for a slice of cake at the cafe or pick up an Art Nouveau-inspired souvenir at the gift shop. Using our custom trip planner, Alesund attractions like Jugendstilsenteret and Kunstmuseet Kube can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • The museum offers some nice exhibits, especially the dining room. The introduction through a time machine provides good information but the screens are very small and it looks a little bit outdated...

  • This lovely Art Noveau museum collection is housed in an old Art Noveau pharmacy building that is equally lovely. The admission price includes use of the lockers, which was a welcome way to leave raincoats and backpacks behind for a while. A tunnel connects to the KUBE. Admission also includes the Fishing Museum, about a 10-minute walk away.
  • Interesting exhibition on art nouveau and the traffic fire of Ålesund. Also a great at exhibition in Kube including decorated skate boards.
  • Depressing although informative exhibit about the fire that destroyed the whole town in 1905. The way it works is you go in the "time machine" which is an elevator type room that gets dark and shows a montage of important historical events taking you back to 1905. Then each room has screens and you have to stand (or sit) and wait for it to finish in each room before moving on to the next. But the videos were SO long. They were each made up of a bunch of dramatic readings of peoples journals/accounts of what happened and it went on way longer than it needed to. It some points you're like yeah I get it can we move on please. Also I noticed a lot of the items out in the rooms with the videos have no label or information which I thought was strange. Like there's just a random brick on display. As for the architecture, in my opinion there weren't enough photos/examples. There were a couple displays of stained glass saying the creator did this because it's their xyz style but it just wasn't a lot to look at showing this is what we mean by art nouveau. Gift shop is cute. They have lots of books and some art by local people. Also candies and chocolates. There is wifi in the cafe but I didn't get signal anywhere else. Bathrooms are in the basement as are the lockers.
  • Good exhibition of modern art and art nouveau. There was a contemporary art exhibition in the nearby building, included with the same ticket (90kr). Highly recommended
  • I absolutely can't get over the glass exit part. You are literally a museum about Art Nouveau/Lugendstil yet you build this hidious glass and steel exit to the modern exhibition part. Such a glaring missed oppertunity. You're trying to praise this architectural/art style yet you don't even take the time to stay true to it. This entire city for this matter too. its putting its Art nouveau up front as its biggest eye catcher and tourist magnet but at no point is this being added to. No new Art nouveau is being built anywhere for at least 100 years. When you go inside tourist and art shops all you see is pictures and art of these beautiful unique works of art of buildings yet its not being respected at all. The town hall is a great example. I have seen some great buildings but I honestly left this city angry.
