Kim Il-sung Square, Pyongyang

3.4
The largest plaza in North Korea, Kim Il-sung Square takes central stage for military parades and other national celebrations. A massive area, the square boasts several buildings, including the national art gallery. On the opposite side, across the river, a landmark tower boldly overlooks the wide square. Some say the space can host over 100,000 people at once. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Pyongyang holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Kim Il-sung Square and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

At least, in size. Though, the monuments are quite nice, and if you are lucky enough to see a parade or a mass dancing event, it takes things to other dimension.  more »

I could make the space in the frame of the bike tour. Driving with the bicycle is forbidden. Very impressive, one such place, you can see which mostly on TV, to be able to commit itself.

Been there. Best place ever. I met that kinda fat but kind guy. He is called Kim I don't think he is very famous. Anyway, Kim showed me what he likes to do in this country so he took random childrens and invited me to eat them. They were really good with salt. 10/10 would go there again!!

We visited here on a Sunday morning, there was around 300-400 women on their hands and knees scrubbing the floor! Very very surreal!! Apparently they do it every Sunday morning.

Arguably the most majestic public space in Pyongyang despite the political issues going on in the country and how the outside world portrays it. This is the testament that North Korea as a country is still a Kim Dynasty, the family that owns the country. To be there to witness that is a mixed feelings to many people, I personally feel that there's no where else in the world that you'd get this kind of tense environment by being particularly in this square, and it makes you wonder... if the people there are really satisfied as they appeared from the streets in Pyongyang or is there a side of Pyongyang that the mainstream media got to expose before us?

I would have rated this place 5 stars but I only can give it a 4 stars. I took a picture of the Great Leader here, and the police confiscated my camera and chopped off my right hand for being "a traitor of the state". Luckily, I am left handed and only use my right hand to wipe my ass. Great place to visit, just don't take pictures of the GREAT LEADER.

Where to stay in Pyongyang

Hotels remain just about the only form of accommodation in Pyongyang, with options ranging from budget stays to luxury complexes featuring restaurants, shopping, and even casinos. The one budget hotel is often filled, but on the other end of the spectrum, the capital has many more mid-range to pricey options with exciting amenities, including one that operates a casino out of the basement of its 47-story structure.
