Former Residence of Mangyongdae, Pyongyang

1.0
#5 of 7 in Historic Sites in North Korea
Historic Site Tourist Spot
A serene park rich in greenery marks the birthplace of Kim-sung II at Former Residence of Mangyongdae. Once a village, and now a huge park, the site provides you with the glimpse of Korean life and the leader's childhood. The site contains small huts, each of them presenting some historic artifacts, from vases to pictures. You can drink water from the well, which Kim-sung II drank because of its health properties. Keep in mind that the site demands respect--you must follow the rules and behave accordingly. • Visit suggested and forced into the tourist activities of Pyongyang, the House itself is a fully restored or new construction with nothing very characteristic to highlight for a Western except some agricultural tools of wood and ancient pots... but very important and deep respect to the North Koreans for what it represents... an atmosphere of peace lives since speakers favourite leader is heard North Korean traditional soft music... According to the Guide. It is a very nice Park for walking and front of the House there is a water well... very good and fresh drink where Kim Il Sung, there are a few bowls made of pumpkin with which you can drink from the same water as their leader... .the most interesting travel... since it was very hot and the water was very good. Also next to this there is a kiosk where they sell ice cream, refreshments and souvenirs.

  • Interesting to listen to the guide talk about Kim Il Sung, but the whole thing feels a little contrived and fake.  more »

Where to stay in Pyongyang

Hotels remain just about the only form of accommodation in Pyongyang, with options ranging from budget stays to luxury complexes featuring restaurants, shopping, and even casinos. The one budget hotel is often filled, but on the other end of the spectrum, the capital has many more mid-range to pricey options with exciting amenities, including one that operates a casino out of the basement of its 47-story structure.
