Formed by two volcanoes, Isla Ometepe is the largest island on the vast Lake Nicaragua. With a name meaning “two mountains” in Nahuatl, the remote island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, rich in culture, wildlife, and history. Considered a sacred land by the indigenous nations, the island offers visitors numerous archaeological sites, artifacts, and petroglyphs to admire. Explore the island’s isolated, scenic trails, and spot numerous plant and animal species, or lounge on one of the many picturesque lakeside beaches. You can try fishing, horseback riding, cycling, or even climbing the volcanoes, but note that you need a guide for the strenuous trek. One of the volcanoes is still active. • The island itself is a highlight, not only the volcanoes, also the kayaking or hiking to the waterfalls in San Ramon. Because taxis are extremely expensive (a taxi ride from Moyogalpa to E.g. Merida costs just 30 euros!) the island by motorcycle or scooter is to explore, where a motorcycle due to the very poor gravel roads in the other part of the island is preferred. I rented a scooter for 50 bucks for 2.5 days directly to the ferry in San Jorge. Rental: Luxury tours of Ometepe, English spoken. I sold was a modern Scooter, get I have a bunch of old scrap, in which Starter / Horn did not work and the rear brake then on the island only something after I've made it clear that they should fix it. On the first drive, the mirrors fell off then. Conclusion: Be sure only over rent in Moyogalpa and test-drive before payment the scooter a few meters!
