Isla Ometepe, Moyogalpa

Formed by two volcanoes, Isla Ometepe is the largest island on the vast Lake Nicaragua. With a name meaning “two mountains” in Nahuatl, the remote island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, rich in culture, wildlife, and history. Considered a sacred land by the indigenous nations, the island offers visitors numerous archaeological sites, artifacts, and petroglyphs to admire. Explore the island’s isolated, scenic trails, and spot numerous plant and animal species, or lounge on one of the many picturesque lakeside beaches. You can try fishing, horseback riding, cycling, or even climbing the volcanoes, but note that you need a guide for the strenuous trek. One of the volcanoes is still active. Isla Ometepe is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Isla de Ometepe Edition.

  • I was several months in Nicaragua, I've seen enough, and without a doubt, Ometepe is the excursion that I most liked. I recommend water eye and Charco Verde. Also tip Jesus Maria to see the sunset and beach spring if you spare time.

  • We were here 3 days. Beautiful and adventurous island with very little traffic. There is much to do, beautiful volcanoes, waterfalls, hiking trails and natural beauty.

  • Visit eye of water and what note is that prices for the restaurant are quite high and very small portions

  • Absolutely beautiful place to visit. You have to get a ferry which isn't expensive at all to get there, it takes about 40 minutes or more. But once you are there you are in a different world. The people are lovely and if you get the chance, rent a bike or motorbike to explore the island. It's a very chilled place to be and so beautiful, with it's two volcanoes one of whish is active and you can climb up to see the lava (best seen at night time) You are in an island in the middle of a huge lake, with two volcanoes! What else you need?!
  • Ometepe, in itself, is just an average island with average scenery and average beaches. Other than the trek up Volcan Concepcion, it offers few good things to do. Simply put, it is over-hyped.
  • Well ometepe is a magical place full of peaceful and great energy love that place.
  • Spectacular natural beauty on a scale difficult to describe.
  • Nice island and worth a visit! If you go there, rent a scooter/motorcycle to drive around the island.
