  • It is said to be the largest Cathedral in Central America. One thing is certain. Is in Leon, but is a world heritage site and is huge, consists of five ships. UNESCO has inscribed León Cathedral as a world heritage site by "express the transition from colonial baroque to neoclassicism ...". Quite frankly I do not agree with this explanation, as the Baroque Cathedral has little, certainly, colonial was started to build in the 18th century and was suffering some changes over time. Just a few indications, this neoclassical in my humble and amateur opinion. The Cathedral that officially is called Insigne and Real Basilica Cathedral of the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has a name more pompous than for example the interior, which in addition to too broad is characterized by simplicity, but very harmonious and in addition to the various religious sculptures, houses the tomb of various personalities, being the most illustrious Rubén Darío Nicaraguan Poet Greater. In addition to imposing, this Cathedral can be seen as a Nicaraguan National Pantheon and is a must visit. After visiting the inside, the next step will be the outside, where does one get around the whole Cathedral, wants to continue to enjoy the wonderful construction or enjoy and buy the numerous traditional objects for sale by street vendors that fill the whole space, the opportunity to have a few natural juices or snack food made by these merchants. If you started the "spin" through the front door of the Cathedral, ends its journey in the right Tower of the Cathedral and a new world will open for you. Upon payment of a nominal fee, climb the narrow stairs to the top of the Tower, take off your shoes and then enter another dimension. Stroll through the restored coverage of the Cathedral, as if from the sky. Stunning view over the entire city of Leon, where we can enjoy the streets and roofs of colonial houses in 360 degrees. Not to be missed. Exciting is also the vision of the volcanic ridge of Nicaragua, where you can enjoy an appreciable amount of volcanoes, some active. I'm not going to say that will be the best of the visit, but you will never forget this dazzling panorama, is guaranteed. You won't want to leave. I would still take around and around, to enjoy the splendour of the landscape that the top of the magnificent cathedral gives us. One of the best surprises of Leon. Everything in this town revolves around this impressive building. Is the nerve centre of the city. Nobody is indifferent to this heritage that belongs to all mankind.

  • The interior of this cathedral is nice, but the view on and of the roof are spectacular. The roof is painted white and shoes are not permitted. You are required to remove and carry your shoes while on...  more »

  • I place you must visit if you go to Nicaragua my first time in the country. The three dollars I paid for the tour was worthy. You will have a tour guide to explain everything about the cathedral and the city. One of the best places I visited.
  • Impressive size and architecture inside and out. Go pay a minimal fee to climb the rooftop to see great views of the city. You will be required to go barefoot to preserve the paint. Also has a small museum in the basement.
  • Beautiful church. One of the oldest and largest in latin america
  • One of the major sights in this small town, which is a easy day-trip destination from Managua.
  • Newly renovated cathedral. Cost is 84 Cordoba ( $3 USD) to go up to the top. Well worth it. It was open on Sunday.
