Maderas Volcano, Isla de Ometepe
Categories: Volcanos, Nature & Parks
Despite being the smaller of two volcanoes that make up the island of Ometepe, Maderas Volcano presents a challenging yet rewarding trek. You will need a guide to climb the volcano, no matter what your fitness level, as there are a confusing number of paths at the top. Along the way, the trail can turn muddy even during the dry season, so wear sturdy hiking shoes. Experience one of the few cloud forests, a place where rich plant and wildlife flourish in high levels of humidity. Once at the top, descend into the crater where a cold lagoon is often covered by mist. At the beginning it was about good walkable paths up to the lookout, as was the way but getting steeper and more difficult. Actually, we could see no more track and knew only thanks to our guides what to do. Unfortunately, it was up then to foggy, so that the views of the crater lake was denied us. Nevertheless, the ascent through the cloud forest was very impressive and unforgettable. After a half hour break we were again on the descent, which luckily was not quite so exhausting, so that we could enjoy the nature and the beautiful views. In total we needed eight hours for the tour. We recommend shoes with good tread and sufficient water to bring (we needed three liters per person).show original
