Concepcion Volcano, Isla de Ometepe
(4.6/5 based on 180+ reviews on the web)
Attempt to scale the majestic heights of Concepcion Volcano, a powerful presence on the Nicaraguan skyline with an elevation of 1610 m (5282 ft). Set off on the gruelling trail through a biodiverse environment, starting in deep jungle and muddy farmland before climbing toward a steep, sparse landscape with rocks and debris becoming more frequent as you get closer to the volcano's rim. Toward the summit, you will encounter strong, cold winds, and if you’re lucky, glimpse panoramic views stretching from the Pacific coast of Nicaragua to the Caribbean Sea. More often than not, thick cloud conceals this view. However, the sight of the volcano’s vast mouth and its almighty power makes the hike worthwhile, no matter the weather. Be prepared for an extremely difficult climb, bring water and appropriate footwear, and consider hiring a guide to help you. With our international travel planner, Isla de Ometepe attractions like Concepcion Volcano can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • We have climbed the volcano with a guide who said much to us and spoke good English. The tour itself is very varied, quite exhausting (it took us eight hours, may take but also ten to twelve hours) because it crosses different vegetation zones. If you want higher than 1,000 meters should take but necessarily a guide, not for nothing the climb without a guide is actually forbidden! The last hour you climb in part 70 degree slope often loose rubble and ash 30 meter-deep gorges over. Slipping, a false step or a descent in the dark can be life-threatening. A woman who wanted to climb alone despite multiple warnings of our guides, fell and broke his knee and arm, fell almost into a ravine. Towards the end of the descent, a ten-Member "rescue team" walking accommodated us to recover the woman. According to the Guide, it costs several thousand euros, which probably not likely assume also the best insurance.

  • 9 h of hiking with a section, the last 1:30 of rise and the first hour of descent is very steep. Really not for everyone. But if you are adventurous, it's a good challenge! My muscles are very sore! A guide is useful and varies between $ 10/person and $ 30/person USD. You are, the more you can negotiate. And obviously the guide $ 10 probably won't speak English, our $ 10 spoke a Spanish simply incomprehensible. Leave early. Not later than 7 h. Ideally 5 h or 6 h not to be pressed by the darkness in the case of a problem or if your pace is slower. For what is the view, personally is about one-half of the descent we saw something. Good luck to you and I would suggest a back-pack for everyone, because you protects the back if you slip. One of us slipped heavily and injured his back. A back-pack would have told all.

  • Trekking is possible (always guided, as climatic conditions are changing and it may become dangerous) from Moyogalpa or Santo Domingo to enjoy the spectacular views. Essential in nicaragua.
