Iglesia de La Merced, Granada

(4.6/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Pay a visit to Iglesia de La Merced, a historic site of Catholic pilgrimage. Originally built in 1539, the church was razed by pirates in the mid 17th century and rebuilt with its current Baroque facade in the 1780s. Restored with an ornate interior in the 1860s, the church today contains an image of the Virgen de Fatima, a sacred object that draws many pilgrims. Climb up the bell tower that flanks the church to gain extensive views of the city and beyond, including many major urban and natural attractions. • It is definitely worth a trip. We tried to go up but both days it was closed while we visited. We didn't see any posted hours. Just be aware it isn't always open. We tried to go at 5 and 5:30 so we co...  more »
  • Enjoyed taking in the view from the bell tower. The staircase to the top is fairly steep and tight but not too far, so some people may have difficulty negotiating the steps. Definitely worth the $1 an...  more »
  • The unique interest of this visit is the view on the roofs of the city, the Cathedral and the Mombacho Volcano, but it is worth, you will not be disappointed by mounting the top of the Tower!

  • I had a very negative experience here. The man at the desk was rude and unhelpful. Like every where in Nicaragua they had no change. No problem but he got very defensive, wouldn't cooperate and then, gave change to locals when he couldn't to guests. It just leaves such a negative impression of Granada, such a shame
  • The church is decent but the main highlight is climbing to the top of the belltower. It costs 25 Cordobas or $1 to get up. You climb a tight spiral staircase to get there. You get good views of Granada but not quite as impressive as the church in Leon, still worth 15-30 minutes of your time.
  • You can go on the bell tower for 1$. You have a great view over Granada. The best time would be just before sunset. There is a great light over the city.
  • For a small fee you can take the step steps up to the top of the bell tower - if it's a clear day it's well worth doing it, the views are stunning - all the colourful architecture and the lake in the background.
  • Great view of the city, and a lovely church with a low price for a tour
