Whangarei Falls, Whangarei

4.5
Marvel at the cascading water and lush native bush of Whangarei Falls. The dramatic waterfall plunges 26.3 m (86.3 ft) over basalt cliffs, creating an impressive spectacle that can be enjoyed from three viewing platforms. Two circular walking routes surround the falls, allowing you to take them in from various angles. The Whangarei Falls loop spans just 1 km (0.6 mi) and takes around 30 minutes, while the Sands Road loop stretches 4.8 km (3 mi) and should take approximately three hours. Bear in mind that both walks involve crossing a bridge with no handrail, which may make some visitors nervous. Though neither route is particularly strenuous, comfortable walking shoes are advisable. A picnic area and restrooms are located by the parking lot. • We were recommended to call in here whilst on our drive. It's just a few minutes off the main state highway. We enjoyed the Falls, they aren't spectacular like obvious Falls elsewhere, but it's a dece...  more »
  • Nice stop off on the way up to the Bay of Islands. There are toilets at the attraction but no cafĂ©. Good parking and only a few minutes off the main highway.  more »
  • With the Sun it's beautiful, without it's dull. Small path of 20 minutes. Easy if dry weather. It's a detour, not a visit in itself.

  • A nice waterfall with several viewing and photo points. The walk down is a bit run down and can be a bit slippery during wet weather. Though it's highly recommended to stick to the footpath, you can go behind the fall by walking through the stones around the lake at the bottom of the fall. Not sure whether it's safe to swim in the lake though. There's a family of duck that live on the lake.
  • Huge amazing waterfall! Located close to the town which is just a short 5 mins drive away. The quick brisk walkway loops around the waterfall and gives a good view of the waterfall. Water quality warning signs for no swimming, but still able to see eels in the clear water. Ample parking for those driving to visit, or just stopping to use the public restrooms.
  • Great lunch spot! The waterfalls are a 5 min walk from a parking lot with flushing toilets and there are plenty of trees to enjoy a picnic. Even some benches too! The whole loop is about 1km and the portion of the loop away from the falls has switch backs if stairs are a challenge.
  • Awesome attraction, nicely done pathway to go around, very friendly ambassadors helping to get your way.
  • A great walk. Suitable for families with young children, as the loop is not too long for the little ones. The waterfall is beautiful. Definitely recommend to others.
