Whangarei Falls, Whangarei

4.5
Marvel at the cascading water and lush native bush of Whangarei Falls. The dramatic waterfall plunges 26.3 m (86.3 ft) over basalt cliffs, creating an impressive spectacle that can be enjoyed from three viewing platforms. Two circular walking routes surround the falls, allowing you to take them in from various angles. The Whangarei Falls loop spans just 1 km (0.6 mi) and takes around 30 minutes, while the Sands Road loop stretches 4.8 km (3 mi) and should take approximately three hours. Bear in mind that both walks involve crossing a bridge with no handrail, which may make some visitors nervous. Though neither route is particularly strenuous, comfortable walking shoes are advisable. A picnic area and restrooms are located by the parking lot. • Was very nice facilities, however the fall were a little disappointment, although I would think it would be great in full flood. The surrounds are well maintained with good parking.  more »
  • Access to view the top of the falls from the car park (limited spaces) is very easy including for disabilities. Getting down to the bottom would be challenging as one side requires steps and the other...  more »

  • Great lunch spot! The waterfalls are a 5 min walk from a parking lot with flushing toilets and there are plenty of trees to enjoy a picnic. Even some benches too! The whole loop is about 1km and the portion of the loop away from the falls has switch backs if stairs are a challenge.
  • A great walk. Suitable for families with young children, as the loop is not too long for the little ones. The waterfall is beautiful. Definitely recommend to others.
  • The waterfall is nice to look at, easily accessible and the surroundings are well maintained. However, parking can be challenging during the holidays. The water quality is a serious concern, as the water is not deemed safe to go in to, due to all the farm run off higher up the river.
  • Amazing falls, very pretty. Has a nice carpark with clean toilets. A short walk takes you on a loop to the bottom of the falls. Great place to take the kids.
  • First time visiting, driving through, definitely a must see waterfall. Had a quick stop, so didn't go down to the bottom, but viewpoints were good from the top.
