Abbey Caves, Whangarei

4.3
#7 of 12 in Parks in Whangarei
Journey underground at Abbey Caves, an adventurous caving experience with three undeveloped cave systems. Visitors should have at least a moderate fitness level for scrambling over slippery rocks and climbing through small holes. People brave enough to explore the cave are rewarded with amazing sights: dramatic rock formations, stalactites, eels, and glowworms. Be sure to wear closed footwear with good tread and bring a flashlight or headlamp and change of clothes. • Did it for a rainy day. It was quite slippery. Wear boots rain or enter caves barefoot since water inside the caves can be reached to his knees. It is a good activity. It is free and looks perfect to the glowworms.

  • Just follow the road along the coast, Waipu was next stop. Here, the first Scottish settlers landed in 1853. Today, only 10% Scots living there may be, nevertheless the Highland Games are aligned every year on the 1st of January here. In the same corner you can walk but just as well through the Waipu coastal trail along fields and meadows, as well as a nature reserve, up to a large cave with glow-worms and stalactites. It had rained again erwähnenden in the days before you can deeply penetrate only with equipment and clothes that can get dirty, in the cave. Already the way then, an ankle-deep in mud leaves, that I arrived at the cave, abort after few meters. After all, it is enough for a hard-won photo. • Lovely out of the way spot that rewards people willing to spend a bit of effort. Well worth a visit. Note for inside caves do not go after heavy rain and wear good footwear plus you need a torch
  • What an amazing place and a great free thing to do. 3 limestone caves filled with glow worms. A fairly easy walking track down, around and back to the car park. Everything is well marked and there are gates and stools built into the walk to help you get over the fences. The landscape contains a lot of huge scattered volcanic rocks and is reminiscent of something you'd see in Lord of the Rings as many places in New Zealand are. The cave areas and rainforest are reminiscent of Dagobah from Star Wars, so the whole time it feels like you are venturing around this idyllic wonderland which was manufactured by none other than mother nature herself. Highly recommended.
  • So much fun, so much to explore. Def a great family day out.
  • The Abbey Caves may not be the most spectacular caves, but they are in a beautiful area. When it's raining old clothes are recommended, because it can be muddy.
  • These caves are definitely worth a visit for those who enjoy adventure. I recommend bringing equipment such as a head torch and closed in shoes. I would suggest a reasonable level of fitness.
