Abbey Caves, Whangarei

4.3
#7 of 12 in Parks in Whangarei
Journey underground at Abbey Caves, an adventurous caving experience with three undeveloped cave systems. Visitors should have at least a moderate fitness level for scrambling over slippery rocks and climbing through small holes. People brave enough to explore the cave are rewarded with amazing sights: dramatic rock formations, stalactites, eels, and glowworms. Be sure to wear closed footwear with good tread and bring a flashlight or headlamp and change of clothes. • A visit to the caves is a small but worthwhile adventure. This entails but appropriate equipment and much self responsibility. We have the big cave (many fireflies) in two hours and the Middle Cave (can be crossed with a little climbing skills) visited.

  • Visit them! Natural Caves. But never go alone. These caves are all natural and without any safety equipment or something! Prepare to get wet feet and bring a torch. If you are into climbing and exploring for FREE than this is something for you. Had so much fun here.
  • Whangarei's unofficial adventure park? Area in and above the limestone caves are fascinating. Naturally sculptured rocks. You'll need good sturdy shoes and if you don't mind getting your feet wet, a good torch, and possibly a helmet to explore the caves.
  • Absolutely one thing to do. Maybe the best place where see a lot of glows and totally for free. Put shorts and maybe barefoot is the best way to get inside. Don't forget the light and if you find people over there, go inside all together. Alone is gonna be a little scary and probably dangerous.
  • Looking forward to exploring when we have the proper gear. It's free and looks exciting.
  • Lovely out of the way spot that rewards people willing to spend a bit of effort. Well worth a visit. Note for inside caves do not go after heavy rain and wear good footwear plus you need a torch
