New Chums Beach, Whangapoua

4.5
#5 of 19 in Beaches in Waikato Region
Still undeveloped, New Chums Beach enchants intrepid travelers with its stretch of white sand fringed by native palms and pohutukawa trees. After crossing a shallow estuary at the trailhead, you'll need to take an uneven coastal path to get to the beach--the terrain and the remoteness of the spot helps it remain so unspoiled and uncrowded. • If in the Coromandel area, you must visit this outstanding beach. Need to wear decent footwear (NOT JANDALS) to cross the rocks but the short walk round the headland is totally worth it. New Chums bea...  more »
  • Been travelling around north island. 35 min walk across tight corners and rough stones ( on hands and legs) to get to new chum beach. Not worth the hard walk. Supposed claim as top 10 beach ? Hmm!! de...  more »
  • New Chums is the perfect NZ beach if you catch it in summer, and on a sunny day. It has nice sand, clear water, and some waves. There is limited shade from trees so it's a good idea to take a sun umbr...  more »

  • One of the most amazing experiences of my life. The beach is a bit of a challenge to find, but that is the magic of it. Drive to the end of the road and there is a bit of a parking lot. Now its a bit of a hike, walk across the river that splits the beach in two towards the rocky beach, walk along the rocky beach towards Chums Look Out, you'll see a path that cuts up into the woods, follow it! After a short hike through some indigenous NZ forest, you'll find your walking out onto one of the most exclusive beaches New Zealand has to offer. There are some Metrosideros excelsa(New Zealand Christmas tree) that line the forest edge that make some great canopy, bring a hammock if you got one.
  • Beautiful beach, kids loved it and the short easy walk was half the fun. Loads of space, water was pristine- a great day out.
  • Beautiful beach. Muddy, slippery trail, best to stick to rocks until the end of them. Steep trail to look out is well worth it. Could spend all day here. A basic hike in hike out paid, well looked after camp site would offer an incredible experience if ever offered here.
  • The most beautiful beach ever!
  • What a gorgeous place well away from the rest of the world.. thought I had died & gone to heaven.
