History Museum
Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history. Regular cruises aboard the iconic Waimarie Paddle Steamer - NZ’s only coal-fired paddle steamer operating from the golden riverboat era - are available during warmer months (October - April) and private charter cruises can be made by arrangement anytime. View cruise entertainment, timetable, prices and purchase tickets online or at the Waimarie Centre, where you can also uncover river memorabilia at the Waimarie Museum and marvel at a 134-year old architecturally designed building.
Take a look at our Whanganui family vacation planner to schedule your visit to Waimarie and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Exciting for the kids to see how a steam ship works. They asked 'what's coal?' !! However very expensive for a family to afford. I guess it's for the tourists not for New Zealanders. Such a shame.  more »
