Waimarie, Whanganui

4.6
#4 of 13 in Museums in Manawatu-Wanganui Region
Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history. Regular cruises aboard the iconic Waimarie Paddle Steamer - NZ’s only coal-fired paddle steamer operating from the golden riverboat era - are available during warmer months (October - April) and private charter cruises can be made by arrangement anytime. View cruise entertainment, timetable, prices and purchase tickets online or at the Waimarie Centre, where you can also uncover river memorabilia at the Waimarie Museum and marvel at a 134-year old architecturally designed building.
Take a look at our Whanganui family vacation planner to schedule your visit to Waimarie and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

One reason why you should visit Whanganui, is the visit of the Riverboat Center where historical exhibits are. But most importantly, here the Waimarie should reside, the last paddle steamer of New Zealand, which was imported from England. From 1900 until 1952, you ran on the Whanganui River before you completely unspectacular sank at her mooring. 41 years later the wreck was recovered, restored and again left from the stack at the beginning of the 21st century. Previously on the website find out about the timetable. Learn more about the region and New Zealand in my blog on my profile.

We went on the two-hour "Cruising at 11", which was very enjoyable. There was some commentary along the way, though it was not always audible. The Waimarie has a small cafe on board, serving excellent...  more »

  • Bit cold in winter but a really cool historic experience.
  • Enjoyed the trip - however, there wasn't to much to see on the journey there and back. It seemed a bit expensive for what it was. Highlights were seeing the steam engine being operated and seeing the carrier pigeons take the messages back to the boat shed.
  • The section of river you get to see is not super interesting, but seeing a well restored, working steam ship in action and hearing the history is well worth it.
  • Fantastic authentic River Steam Paddlewheeler. Well run Best way to see the City and rural Whanganui.
  • Really nice young lady who worked in office when we came few months back, she was friendly and had good customer service skills. Boat ride OK, food was expensive but the crew was nice.
