Durie Hill Elevator, Whanganui
(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Ride up to panoramic views on Durie Hill Elevator, New Zealand's first public underground elevator. Soak up views of the Tasman Sea and surrounding mountains on the platform at the end of the line, and climb the adjacent 33.5 m (110 ft) memorial tower for an even greater vantage point. Built in 1919, the elevator represents a historical local landmark as well as an important local thoroughfare. If you need some exercise, a 191-step walkway also accesses the hilltop, so feel free to take the elevator up and the stairs down, or vice-versa. • You can either drive to the top or just the elevator. Great view of Whanganui. Anyone can be high even on the Tower in the vicinity, there are however 176 steps. The view compensated however. :-)

  • I visited the Tower in a small evening tour. Over the bridge to the tunnel and then the lift upwards (he was the highlight for me). The view is do, down, I then took the stairs. For a short trip OK, but extra there, not worth it.

  • The elevator (lift) was built less than 100 years ago and simply takes you from the top of the hill to the bottom. However, as elevators travel vertically. they built a tunnel 200 metres into the hill...  more »

  • Amazing experience. Well worth doing if you are visiting Whanganui.
  • Nice place for jogging
  • 除了电梯女值班员对华人的不友善以外,这里是非常值得来观光一下去处!
  • All of the Whanganui, overlooking a wonderful place.
