Durie Hill Elevator, Whanganui

4.4
Ride up to panoramic views on Durie Hill Elevator, New Zealand's first public underground elevator. Soak up views of the Tasman Sea and surrounding mountains on the platform at the end of the line, and climb the adjacent 33.5 m (110 ft) memorial tower for an even greater vantage point. Built in 1919, the elevator represents a historical local landmark as well as an important local thoroughfare. If you need some exercise, a 191-step walkway also accesses the hilltop, so feel free to take the elevator up and the stairs down, or vice-versa. • This is a fascinating activity, unlike anything else in the world. I love dropping visitors at the bottom with a couple of gold coins and sending them into the tunnel. Then I drive to the top and meet...  more »
  • We'd just had a look at the fantastic view from the memorial tower on Drurie Hill just 20 yards from the elevator so felt we'd already had the better view. We could see that the elevator had its uses ...  more »
  • You have to do this. A really novel experience and the climb to the top of the War memorial once you get to the top of Drurie hill is a must do. The views are sensational  more »

  • Very unique experience. There is parking at the top and bottom. We parked at the bottom, walked in the tunnel to the lift. It costs $2 per person per direction. It takes a minute or two to go up and then we were at the top of the hill. There's a great war memorial and a lookout at the top. I feel sorry for all the houses the lookout looks out on. We decided to walk down the hill instead of taking the lift back down. All told it took about an hour.
  • 2$ to get up. Really amazing view when you're up. The elevator looks and smells, and well... Is old, in case you don't feel comfortable with elevators. There's a long tunnel that leads to it. It is very bike-friendly and driving through the tunnel is fun. Definitely worth the view and the 2$.
  • It's great to know the history of the elevator and the tunnel was very nicely painted and preserved. The lady operating the elevator was incredibly unfriendly and appeared irritated at us asking questions. This ruined the experience a little bit for us but nonetheless less it's a great place to go
  • The tunnel down the bottom is great for the kids to hear an echo. Even if you just visit the tunnel is a good laugh.
  • The tunnel is an echo chamber. The kids totally love it. The elevator is otherwise like any other elevator but somewhat antiquated. Use it to get to the top them walk up the steps to get a bird's-eye view of Whanganui. Finish by walking down the path to the start point.
