Cape Foulwind Walkway, Westport

(4.6/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Despite its odious name, Cape Foulwind Walkway remains an ideal place for close encounters with kekeno--the New Zealand's fur seals. Whales are also slowly making a comeback in the area, after a whaling station on the cape diminished their numbers in the past. Access the colony via a walkway, which crosses undulating farmland and continues northward along the scenic coastal bluffs to a lighthouse. You will find lots of information panels along the way, describing historic sea voyages, explorers, timbermills, and quarries. • Remote, austere and awesome. So fun to watch the baby seals play. Worth the drive. The sunshine was nice, but we'd still go even it was storming!  more »
  • Always above the coast with great views! The walk is not very tiring, but has a few gradients but will be rewarded with great views. We are walking the 4 km to the seals! Over at the lighthouse, on and across meadows, was very entertaining as always new to see and discover were. The seal colony has captivated us then total at the end of our walk. Then we ate delicious and also great views, in the "the Bayhouse".

  • Easy walkway, suitable for wheelchairs from Tauranga Bay to Seal colony. We were able to watch the mother seals feeding their cubs, teaching them to swim in the rock pools and also going out to sea to...  more »
