Must see · Nature / Park · Wildlife Area
The world's first urban eco-sanctuary, Zealandia hosts New Zealand's most endangered native animals, including tuatara, kiwi and giant wētā, all living wild just ten minutes from downtown Wellington. Visitors of all ages can enjoy hands-on learning about New Zealand's natural history, from 80 million years ago to the present day. If you prefer to venture on your own, you can explore the 225 hectare (560 acre) valley via moderate hiking trails or wheelchair-accessible paths. To gain deeper insight into the sanctuary's special ecosystem, sign up for a guided daytime, twilight, or night tour--just make sure you book in advance. A favorite of guests, the flashlight-guided night tour introduces you to the sights and sounds of the New Zealand bush, which you can only catch after the sun goes down. Put ZEALANDIA Ecosanctuary on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Wellington vacation maker site.

  • One of my best memories and activity in Wellington. Photos do not do this place justice ! I attended the dawn tour with the family and found the tour informative. We took a relaxing walk in the sanctuary and because it’s a tour after hour, we have the place all to ourselves. Also extremely grateful and lucky to be able to see kiwi towards the end of the tour. Highly recommend this place for everyone who is visiting Wellington!
  • Beautiful place with lots of New Zealand’s floral and birds. I had a very nice time walking around Zealandia and enjoy the vibes.
  • A beautiful place to discover and enjoy New Zealand's amazing flora and fauna. I definitely recommend taking a guided tour on your first visit; the knowledgeable guide impressed us so much that we signed up as members, and went back for a night tour!
  • Zealandia is one of my favourite places in Wellington. Birdsong surrounds you any day you visit, and the valley is just bursting with life. The staff are friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable - many of them have been working or volunteering there for years, if not over a decade. Plenty of walking tracks to choose from, for all levels of ability. The yearly membership is well worth it, too - unlimited entry, and discounts on guided tours.
  • It is beautiful. Perfectly laid out with all the different paths one can take. When I saw there was a oath to a goldmine I was happy until I saw it was closed off for being unsafe. I didn't see too many birds but as a guide mentioned that during spring and summer they are out more often as it's cold now. I had a great time.
