Westpac Stadium, Wellington

Categories: Fun & Games, Sports Complexes
Inspirock Rating:
3.9/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web
Colloquially named the Cake Tin, Westpac Stadium serves as Wellington's main sports venue and the only stadium to have hosted an Australian Football League game outside of Australia. See a variety of sports, from All Blacks rugby matches to One Day International cricket, or one of the large-capacity concerts held here. If traveling in a group, consider reserving a group tour for a behind-the-scenes look at the stadium--check the website for information and inquiries. "Lord of the Rings" film enthusiasts will appreciate the fact that in 2002 Peter Jackson recorded 30,000 cricket fans chanting here to use in the movie. • We took a group of 8 - 11 year olds for a tour of the stadium. The man doing the tour was inappropriate for the age of the children as he kept talking about drunk people and paying rates. Would not go...  read more »

  • I went to see the game of rugby in Wellington, the hurricanes. Very friendly and helpful. Because it has no roof like outdoor fun.

  • How do you review a stadium? I've enjoyed all the events I've been to here (except when England got trashed in the cricket world cup). Beervana is a highlight. Also enjoyed Comic Con. Struggled with the sevens - wouldn't go back unless there were substantial changes. Main negative is the food. Poor quality fast food only. Expensive as well. This is Wellington people. Must try harder here.
  • It's ok. It gets really cold out in the open, and the architecture sometimes goes from "Concrete modern" to "Communist bleak". Better than a lot of stadia though, and the path into and out of the building has been really well thought out.
  • Fantastic stadium for a sporting event - only 4 stars due to very tightly packed crowds on entry/exit (compared to other stadiums I have visited). The design of the stadium could definitely have done with more gates and entrances spaced out around the circumference of stadium.
  • Always a great view for the games. I really appreciate the craft beer at the Phoenix games. Also a great conference centre for workshops and conferences. They look after you.
  • I saw a Super Rugby game there. It's right in the centre of the city. I was able to walk there but also very close to the train station. In fact to get to the stadium I had to walk through train station which felt a little strange. I bought tickets at the gate which was straightforward. It's laid out pretty well with lots of toilets. The food isn't that horribly priced for a sporting arena. As it's a cricket ground the rugby pitch only takes up about 3/4 of it so if sitting in the middle you can be quite far away but the views I had were decent. I was also lucky enough to see a compelling game! (that sadly can't be guaranteed)
