Create an itinerary including Wellington Cable Car
Wellington Cable Car has been in operation since 1902 and is the only public cable car in New Zealand. Departing from the heart of the city centre (Lambton Quay), a five minute ride on this transport heritage icon will take you up to the top of Kelburn lookout for panoramic views over the city and harbour. You can also visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Space Place Observatory and Kelburn Villages Shops here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum, which showcases the interesting history of the city’s symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display.

When you have finished exploring the surrounding attractions at the top, take the short trip back down into the city centre. There are also walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

  • The iconic Wellington Cable Car is still a wonderful gem. I took my 4 grandchildren, all under 9 years old and they loved it. There had been lighting effects added to the tunnels which is very cool. Great customer service from all the staff. This was a really great inexpensive experience for the kids and brought back childhood memories for me. I recommend it.
  • A must do for anyone visiting Wellington. Very interesting display and museum at the top. One of the best places in the city for photos. Loved the light display in the tunnels. That was really special.
  • The Wellington Cable Car is a real treat. A great trip uptown to get a wonderful view of the city, rain or shine. The tickets are very affordable and the service is efficient and helpful staff. The ride itself is quite enjoyable with the surprise in the tunnels and seeing the vista from the cable car. Also at the top there's a cafe, museum for the cable car and also close to the gardens. Overall, a must-do for Wellington visitors.
  • It's an interesting (and efficient) way to travel between the cbd and the Botanic Gardens. The cable car museum at the top is also worth a look. Signage at the top could be clearer.
  • Beautiful and Scenic Journey but of just around 5 minutes one-way. You can see view of Wellington City from window. Nothing new or not any adventurous job. Actually it is a mode of commuting for locals which is being popularised as a Tourist Attraction. No attraction but just an experience on a nominal fare of $5 one way or $7.5 return. Enjoy.
