Tramway Transportation
Wellington Cable Car has been in operation since 1902 and is the only public cable car in New Zealand. Departing from the heart of the city centre (Lambton Quay), a five minute ride on this transport heritage icon will take you up to the top of Kelburn lookout for panoramic views over the city and harbour. You can also visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Space Place Observatory and Kelburn Villages Shops here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum, which showcases the interesting history of the city’s symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display.

When you have finished exploring the surrounding attractions at the top, take the short trip back down into the city centre. There are also walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

  • It is a fast and easy way to the Botanical Gardens and you get the view of the city as well. Great on a sunny day!  more »
  • As I have seen this on many post cards I wanted to come and look/ride. It's a simple trip up hill but views at top are worth it. As there isnt much about this to state I really like what they have don...  more »
  • Got to be done! Short and very sweet. Great lights in the tunnels in the way, nice views of city and harbour at the top.  more »

  • finally been on here with my uncle.. couldn't believe i never had before but that's what my parents were like.. my sister got to do stuff and it was meant to be my opportunity later.. but my opportunities never arose.. no matter how much better i behaved than her.
  • Quite a popular tourist attraction, even though it itself is a less-than-five-minute ride up a hill. Beats walking though, and if you buy bulk passes (eg 25 trips) it's as cheap or better than a bus - for students, anyway.
  • Wow. Great little tram running up the hill to the botanical gardens. It's only a short trip, but great to see a part of history still working. And cheap. Worth the ride.
  • This is a must when in Wellington! The historic cable cars are a short jaunt up the mountain, but they make a couple of interim stops, so you don’t have to pick it up directly downtown. The lines are long, but they move quickly as there are two cars simultaneously running. It is a fun ride and I highly recommend riding in the front by the conductor. They have changing led lights in the tunnels that make the ride a bit whimsical. Once you arrive up top, there are several things do including a map of the grounds, a café, and a little hiking trail. There are some great pano views of the city and bay and a neat observatory (which was closed when I went). You can buy one way or round trip tickets, but the best value is definitely a round trip.
  • Great view of the city at the top, although slightly underwhelming in terms of the length of the ride of the cable car. Would recommend mount Victoria over this view which is free.
