Wellington Cable Car, Wellington

#Tramway, #Lookout, #Must See
Wellington Cable Car has been in operation since 1902 and is the only public cable car in New Zealand. Departing from the heart of the city centre (Lambton Quay), a five minute ride on this transport heritage icon will take you up to the top of Kelburn lookout for panoramic views over the city and harbour. You can also visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Space Place Observatory and Kelburn Villages Shops here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum, which showcases the interesting history of the city’s symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display.

When you have finished exploring the surrounding attractions at the top, take the short trip back down into the city centre. There are also walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

  • From busy downtown Wellington (busy for NZ) to the shady leaves at the top of the Botanical Gardens you are cocooned in a hushed ride in Wellington's hermetically sealed Cable Car. In the old days you...  more »
  • A nice trip up and down. You have beautiful views of the city. There is still of anything above to do only we came after 17 hours and then everything is close.

  • Enjoyable, short cable car ride to great views of Wellington and the surrounding water. We arrived early in the morning and were able to walk right up to the counter and buy our tickets. The cable car...  more »

  • One of the must visit attractions when in Wellington. It is about 4 dollars one way ticket. It takes about 7-8 minutes to get to top. The top has really amazing views. There is a small circuit one can do. There are various places with some really fantastic views. There are gardens and children play area as well. One can walk down to botanical gardens. Really nice place to visit.
  • More fun than we expected because of the other reviews. Yes it's a short ride only, but it's fun! Certainly with younger kids. On top you can choose a variety of walks trough the botanic gardens which are worth the visit. There is also a really nice playground if you just want to go with kids.
  • A great price and you can even use your snapper card to get in (meaning you avoid all of the massive queues at peak times). Great way to see the top of the city and well worth the price (about $3.50 if I remember correctly)
  • One of the must visit attractions for tourists. The ride is about 10 minutes each way and up the top there is a museum that shows the history of the cable car. Right next to that is the Wellington Botanic Garden. On a nice day you can take the cable car up and walk down via the Botanic Garden - another beautiful attraction in Wellington (30 minutes walk back to Lambton Quay).
  • It maybe a short climb but it's panoramic one, with views of Wellington and the bay it sits on. Theres a couple of shops on the left as you get off including a pharmacy, turn right and there's a very interesting Tram museum. Continue on into the park and there's a Space Place, unfortunately this was closed. There is a gun implacement on the hill. Walk through the park and the scenery and flora is in abundance.
