Wellington Cable Car, Wellington

Wellington Cable Car has been in operation since 1902 and is the only public cable car in New Zealand. Departing from the heart of the city centre (Lambton Quay), a five minute ride on this transport heritage icon will take you up to the top of Kelburn lookout for panoramic views over the city and harbour. You can also visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Space Place Observatory and Kelburn Villages Shops here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum, which showcases the interesting history of the city’s symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display.

When you have finished exploring the surrounding attractions at the top, take the short trip back down into the city centre. There are also walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

  • Quick round trip up to the botanical gardens in comfort. Coffee and cake at the top and a walk around the botanical gardens to make up a few hours in Wellington.  more »
  • We took the cable car up to Kelburn to get to the top of the botanical gardens and walk down. The ride was short and not such a big deal and no super view. Also pricey at $5 for a super short ride.  more »

  • Beautiful way to view Wellington city. When you take the ride to the top, you can catch the view of the city on the window. The cable car connects to the Botanical Garden and Rose Garden. Plus, you can catch the free shuttle to Zealandia right out of the station. Price is $9 for a return trip or $5 for one way. The cable car museum is right next to the station and free entry.
  • Took the iconic cable car ride up to the Wellington Botanical Garden. The journey itself is under 10 minutes one way but it is a great experience. At the base, the ticket counter is located in Lambton Quay and there is a waiting area with seats for passengers looking to board the next cable car. An adult return ticket costs $7.50. The cable car is bright red and is well maintained. The scenery is better when seated on the left side of the cable car in the upward journey. The lights in the tunnel made the journey even more spectacular. Once at the top, there is a point which is a favorite among photographers, where the view is of the mountains, sea and the cricket field in the background, and the cable car in the foreground. When in Wellington, this tourist attraction is one that must be experienced!
  • Beautiful trip up to the Botanic Gardens with colourful tunnels that delighted my young'ens. Went up at about 3pm and had a great view of the city. We stayed till about 6pm and got to see the skyline at night too which was lovely, although it was raining. The museum at the top of the hill was very informative and had nice little souvenirs Michael Singapore, May 2018
  • The Wellington Cable Car is a classic and iconic attraction; the first time I visited I was a kid, and now just over a decade later I made my second visit. The ride is less than about 8 minutes to get to the top, where there are viewing binoculars ($2 to use - a little annoying), a lookout over the city, and a museum/gift shop nearby. The botanical gardens are at the top, and not too far away is the observatory - the cable car is a must do for the family!
  • Cool little ride up a very steep hill. Go to cable car museum if you can...and the botanical gardens are worth the effort or the walk.
