Wellington Cable Car, Wellington

Must see · Tramway · Lookout
Wellington Cable Car has been in operation since 1902 and is the only public cable car in New Zealand. Departing from the heart of the city centre (Lambton Quay), a five minute ride on this transport heritage icon will take you up to the top of Kelburn lookout for panoramic views over the city and harbour. You can also visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Space Place Observatory and Kelburn Villages Shops here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum, which showcases the interesting history of the city’s symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display.

When you have finished exploring the surrounding attractions at the top, take the short trip back down into the city centre. There are also walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

  • The uninterested guy selling tickets wasn’t a good start, but to be honest, we are getting use to this in our travels. The tram has 4 stops and a neat way for locals and tourists to get to their...  more »

  • I've been here at night. It was nice experience. Especially space place was amazing. The telegraph is 150 years old but still work fantastic. Staff were so kind. Night view of city was also lovely and sometimes you can find kaka flying around. Nice place!
  • This was even better than I thought! Though a very short journey it was a pleasant one. The lights in the tunnel were amazing and made the journey that more spectacular. We unfortunately were a bit late to visit the museum at the top it closes at five should you want to visit it. Their is also the botanic gardens at the top to visit. The cable car departs every 10 minutes. Would definitely reccomend
  • It's a short ride but a bit of a climb and incline which is why it works best by cable. Fun for the kids and ticketing is easy enough. Up on the hill make sure you walk it as it's not too long. The cafe up there needs to bring it's prices down and up it's standard of almost everything! Didn't enjoy it here but apart from this cafe the rest of the visit was good.
  • Great fun ride up to the top of the city. Fairly cheap, $5 one way, and quite quick only taking 5-10 minutes. Great views from the top, opportunity to catch a free shuttle bus to Zealand, or walk back down through the botanical gardens (up to an hour depending on your walking speed).
  • This was so much fun! For a return fare of $9 it's a must do in Wellington. We caught the car from Cable Car Lane in Lambton Quay to the top, had a coffee and breakfast at the cafe and enjoyed the museum before heading back down. The lights in the tunnel where so cool and the whole experience while short was great. Fyi the Wellington locals use this regularly and seem to get a bit huffy about the tourists, we just ignored them.
