Wellington Cable Car, Wellington

(4.2/5 based on 4,000+ reviews on the web)
Wellington Cable Car has been in operation since 1902 and is the only public cable car in New Zealand. Departing from the heart of the city centre (Lambton Quay), a five minute ride on this transport heritage icon will take you up to the top of Kelburn lookout for panoramic views over the city and harbour. You can also visit the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Space Place Observatory and Kelburn Villages Shops here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum, which showcases the interesting history of the city’s symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display.

When you have finished exploring the surrounding attractions at the top, take the short trip back down into the city centre. There are also walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

  • Buy a one-way ticket to the top, then walk down through the Botanical Gardens. Or, if you're up to it, round-trip and climb back up the gardens and take the cable car back down (it's no longer a cable...  more »
  • Interesting and fun excursion. Views across city from top were great . Leads straight into Botanical gardens. So that was a bonus we enjoyed too.  more »

  • Great to ride the cable car again. I used to do this 40 years ago! Friendly staff and drivers. Very enjoyable experience. An excellent historical display on the ship at the top.
  • Very handy for locals in the Kelburn area, or Victoria University students staying at Weir House. Normally $4 cash one way for Adults, runs every 10 minutes. Colourfully lighted tunnels and Snapper payment options are a good touch. It is marketed towards tourism though, and I avoid it during weekends, especially fine day weekends, most especially when a cruise ship is in town! Cars will pack out with tourists on these days and queuing can be extensive. Still a cool thing to use if you're from out of town and are checking out the Botanical Gardens up top.
  • Great fun. Definitely worth doing the luge ride at the top. We went tandem with our 2yr old on the scenic route ( there are 3 routes to choose) and loved it. Plus you get a rise on the luge ski lift.
  • Pay with Snapper! Cool tunnel with the light effects. Gets you to the beautiful botanical gardens in no time!
  • Easy on and off smooth safe ride with fabulous views and an amazing museum at the top, not forgetting g the botanical gardens at one end and inner city cafes and shops at the other
