Mount Kaukau, Wellington

4.9
#2 of 18 in Nature in Wellington
Climb up to the most visible high point in the scenery surrounding Wellington at Mount Kaukau (also known, in Maori, as Tarikaka). The summit stands 445 m (1,460 ft) above sea level and offers clear, panoramic views of the city, the harbor, and the Rimutaka and Tararua mountain ranges. Wellington's main television tower tops the peak, its idiosyncratic structure making it both a physical and developmental landmark. The walk to the top takes around an hour and involves a steep incline in places. However, the well-maintained trail has an abundance of seating areas and rest points, making the walk suitable for all the family. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Wellington holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Mount Kaukau and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
