Mount Kaukau, Wellington

(4.9/5 based on 170 reviews on the web)
Climb up to the most visible high point in the scenery surrounding Wellington at Mount Kaukau (also known, in Maori, as Tarikaka). The summit stands 445 m (1,460 ft) above sea level and offers clear, panoramic views of the city, the harbor, and the Rimutaka and Tararua mountain ranges. Wellington's main television tower tops the peak, its idiosyncratic structure making it both a physical and developmental landmark. The walk to the top takes around an hour and involves a steep incline in places. However, the well-maintained trail has an abundance of seating areas and rest points, making the walk suitable for all the family. See Mount Kaukau and all Wellington has to offer by arranging your trip with our Wellington vacation builder.

  • Such a fantastic workout - and when you get to the top, wow on a good day that view is just breathtaking. You can see the South Island when it's clear. Lots of walking tracks to choose from
  • Beautiful views and well worth the huff and puff to get up there - lots of different entry points, but the one from Khandallah pool is easy for tourists. Cant beat it on a good day!
  • This is a decent walk and a good run. Many different tracks to choose from. Even if you are not that fit, there are spots along the way to sit and take in the view. Worth going to top to get a super v...  more »
