Mount Kaukau, Wellington

4.9
#2 of 13 in Nature in Wellington
Mountain Lookout
Climb up to the most visible high point in the scenery surrounding Wellington at Mount Kaukau (also known, in Maori, as Tarikaka). The summit stands 445 m (1,460 ft) above sea level and offers clear, panoramic views of the city, the harbor, and the Rimutaka and Tararua mountain ranges. Wellington's main television tower tops the peak, its idiosyncratic structure making it both a physical and developmental landmark. The walk to the top takes around an hour and involves a steep incline in places. However, the well-maintained trail has an abundance of seating areas and rest points, making the walk suitable for all the family. See Mount Kaukau and all Wellington has to offer by arranging your trip with our Wellington vacation builder.

  • There are several tracks leading to the summit. Most are straight up, steep and short but the one starting at the end of the Old Coach Road has an easier gradient but is a bit longer. There's a track ...  more »
  • You have to go up here whilst in Wellington. Great views of the city and rolling hills. The walk isn't challenging, just well built steps up and up.  more »
  • I love the views once you reach the top of Mount Kaukau. This is a steep, uphill walk up a number of steps but will take you less than 1 hour. A great walk for a city lighting the great variety and di...  more »
