Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington

Stroll the winding paths of Bolton Street Cemetery, the final resting place of many historical figures, including the founder of Wellington William Wakefield. The cemetery is an extension of the city's botanical garden, which means that among the tombstones you'll find open lawns surrounded by rare trees, shrubs, bulbs, and even a heritage rose collection. • Take time and wander around; great to gain a historical perspective; from the famous to those who are the ordinary citizens - well worth the time  more »
  • Very interesting, Seemed to have a separate Jewish section, but I guess that was what they did then. Nice walk beyond the botanical gardens.  more »
  • It's nothing extraordinary, but if you are wandering down the hill towards the city from the botanical gardens it's easy to walk through and interesting to see some of the history.  more »

  • Very cool cemetery nestled under the freeway. Interesting history. We did it as part of Botanical Garden returning to the city.
  • Beautifully laid graves dating back more than 100 years. Have a peaceful and solemn walk along the gravestones and nearby trees. Do not bring your superstitious mom along the walk.
  • Ancient graves are kind of attracting. Just remember the place you're in is not a full touristic attraction.
  • An incredible place to contemplate death and the past. History is very much alive in this cemetery that tells its story on each headstone. If you enjoy introspection and thoughtfulness, you should definitely visit this place.
  • Very interesting old cemetery.
