  • Heard a lot of good things about this place but annoyingly on the day we went, the water was murky because of the swell. Not much of a beach to sit on either, having to compete with a lot of people fo...  more »
  • First thing, get there early, otherwise you will be parking kms up the Rd. Don’t bother taking chairs or heaps of stuff, you basically need to sit close to the bank, on the grass bank or on the highes...  more »
  • We went snorkelling and saw an abundance of marine life, there is snorkel equipment available for hire and access to the beach and sea is easy. Well worth a trip.  more »

  • Small Shelly Sandy Beach with some rock pools The main attraction of course is the Marine reserve. You can literally roll up your pants, Wade 3 meters into the surf and see fish under the water. Plenty of places offer snorkel hire to really see the fish. Popular with dive schools for PADI testing. Site has a cold water shower, changing rooms, toilets and picnic tables with ample parking. The sandstone cliffs have some cool faults to find if you get bored with the water.
  • Best snorkelling in Auckland. By no means the best snorkelling I've ever done, but accessible, great for kids to learn and huge snapper. I'd go early if you don't like crowds. Gets unbelievably crowded in summer.
  • One of New Zealand's marine reserves. Means no fishing allowed so the fish have become accustomed to humans. Snapper and other varieties will swim right up to you and around you, and the water is crystal clear so you can just look down and see them! Snorkel and a mask are sufficient to see plenty of underwater life, or you can scuba dive of course. You can also take a glass bottomed boat ride or rent a see-through kayak - tickets for both are available to purchase right from the beach (as well as the scuba diving gear and snorkels).
  • This is a very good little marine reserve for snorkelling, though not the best I've ever visited in terms of the range of things to see. Visibility in the water was pretty good and there were large snapper and goatfish in decent numbers but not a huge amount of other species that I could easily find. Getting in an out of the water is easy and it's accessible off the beach with no strong waves or currents to contend with. Only downside for me was the temperature of the water that necessitated a wetsuit. Some hardy people go without but at 14 degrees Celsius in March I wouldn't have coped. There are places on the beach hiring out equipment at reasonable prices. There were changing rooms with a shower up by the car park, which itself is pretty spacious and I didn't struggle to park as there were plenty of space.
  • Great place to go snorkeling and observe some marine life. The water can be a bit murky, but just take your time to explore the area around the island. The beach and the car park can get pretty crowded, but you can easily find a quiet snorkeling spot for yourself.
