Rippon Vineyard, Wanaka

4.4
#2 of 81 in Wineries in South Island
Set lakeside against the rolling blue hills and light blue waters, the winery of Rippon Vineyard is a treat for the eyes and the palate. The vineyard takes advantage of Central Otago's unique climate--the only continental climate in all of New Zealand. The high UV light, long hours of sunshine, and refractive soil yield pinot noir, Riesling, sauvignon blanc, and gamay noir. Learn about the history of the wine and this biodynamic winery through a wine tasting session led by a knowledgeable guide. • The views are spectacular and the building is lovely. The white wine was like vinegar but the reds were nice which is more than i can say for the impolite host. He was chatting up the french (in french) and swooning over the rich poms leaving the ordinary every day jo to wait in line, get a taste or a word in. One guy was left to wait 20 minutes just to buy a bottle of wine. He didnt want tastings just purchase. I was so unimpressed by the experience i left not buying the rather decent pino. I dont think old Lois would amused by Ed
  • This is a beautiful place that I guess every Wanaka visitor will end up checking it out anyway. The location is on the hill overlooking the lake. It claims to be the 'most photographed vinyard in the world', which I don't want to argue - it does have spectacular view especially when the day is nice. however to my taste, their wine is rather ordinary and over priced. They claim all the wine making specifics which I am not sure how much sense it is making... they brag that don't irrigate their vines, how does this improve the fruit or the wine? or just leaving the fruit quality to the random? the staff claimed that they used the yeast 'from the plant' not using wine maker yeast, is this a taste driven decision or just a marketing term? They don't have a big production given the size of their vineyard and I am sure Rippon will sell everything at cellar door at the premium. I am sure many will enjoy the view while appreciating the wine and cheese plate in a sunny afternoon there. Unfortunately to me the wine there fails into average quality range. I will go there for a nice bunch of lake photos and keep look for my wines from elsewhere.
  • Beautiful spot for an afternoon drink. Make a day of it and walk the Millennium track from town. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash. 🐶
  • Incredible location with amazing views, perfect for weddings. Highlight of their wine selection is the Osteiner. Tastings are by donation and I recommend you grab an outside table and have a cheese platter while you're there to make the most of the view.l
  • Walked here from town on a nice lake path. Great views from the winery and plenty of space to enjoy a drink and picnic outside. Whites were surprisingly good, especially the Rieslings.
