Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Waitomo Caves

Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. We bought a 3-cave combo ticket and we were not disappointed! Aranui Cave is majestic with its white formations. There is a bit of a hike up to the cave entrance that will leave you a little breathles...  more »

On a recent visit to Auckland, we took a bus tour to the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. Thoroughly enjoyed by all 3 of us, Mom, Dad and teenage daughter. Overall an unforgettable experience.  more »

We booked a two-cave tour - Aranui and Glowworm. Both were extremely interesting for different reasons and we had great guides full of knowledge and good humour. I was lucky enough to sing in the 'cat...  more »

From Japan:) Great experience. It was dreamily beautiful. Some tourists did not follow the rule that they must not have taken photos, and the light from their cellphones was quite unpleasant in the dark cave. PLEASE follow the rules.

The caves are really, really cool, the glowworms are amazing but it was just a bit too crowded when we were there. It has rained a lot and the tours had to use the same way in and out of the caves, which made it really quite tight and hard to enjoy the walking parts. The boat ride was amazing though. Would still recommend it to everyone. Call ahead and make sure the caves are open and not flooded and if the tour can finish via the river that will releave a lot of the crowding issues.

Loved the cave tour, there are some flights of stairs you have to navigate. It is well worth the cost and time to see a special part of Waitomo history and beautiful cave formations. Learning the life cycle of the cave worms is very educational.

We were running late and booked the 45min tour. Great tour for all ages. My 12mo loved the boat ride looking up at the glowing cave. Great place to take the family no matter what age.

You expect being very quiet and anyone who isn't is just ruining experience for u. Very fun but short. I think it was because they had to shut down normal exit because of flooding. Tour guides r very knowledgeable and friendly.
