Cave Nature / Park
Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. • Amazing and unique experience. We did the basic tour to the glowworm cave. It includes a guided walk through the cave and explanation of the rock formations and geology of the place. Looks spectacular inside. Ends with a boat ride in complete darkness where you look up and all you can see is thousands of glowworms. Lasts about 45 minutes, easy to moderate effort and our young children, 5 and 7, were able to complete this and have fun!
  • This is expensive but if you are willing to spend money for entertainment then this is an amazing way to do it. I recommend that you check out the cave with the boats that pull you along the path. It is very beautiful and relaxing compared to most tourist activities. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and a breathtaking experience.
  • We did the Ruakuri cave and the the glow worm boat ride. The Ruakuri tour was very nice and we got to see a lot of different parts of the cavern and our tour guide was informative on the history of the cave as well. The glow worm boat ride was quite underwhelming though. It was really just a single area maybe 40 to 60 meters long and 10 meters wide that had tons of glow worms on the ceiling. But I think we were expecting it to be an much larger area and take a bit longer and be more informative.
  • Wonderful place to see flow worms. Also a beautiful natural experience. We also experience going inside a dark underground tunnel in a ⛵
  • Absolutely incredible, even though they'd lost a great deal of glowworms some weeks earlier it was still beautiful, magic and impressive. Very informative guides and very peaceful! A definite must do!
