Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Waitomo Caves

Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. • We recommend the visit to the cave with the rafting activity. The water is cool, but it's a great experience that allows to see the worms glistening with an original physical activity. Too bad not being able to make its own pictures, they offer their photos on a key sold 30 NZ$. You will enjoy a shower at the end with a soup and grilled toast. Activity remains expensive but nice.

  • For now, the tour is completely run. Also must wait for at least an hour in, it may be because so much is going on. I personally thought it would take a boat through the cave and see many fireflies. This is also the case, however it is pulled by boat in a small "cave". There you can see a few fireflies on the ceiling and then it is pulled back. The whole thing takes about 5 minutes. You spend the remaining time in the cave and get the stalactite cave explained. I am very disappointed. It it totally overpriced was also.

  • The temperature in the glow worm caves is very constant throughout the year at around 14 degrees C. The tour was presented by a very kind, old lady who claimed to be related to the person that discovered the cave. She was able to provide a lot of interesting information about the history of the limestone cave and how it has been formed over the years. All kind of fascinating limestone formations are shown while already some glow worms could be observed. Then a large population of glow worms were closely observed just below a rock formation. When the light is switched on, you can clearly see a kind of web that the worm created in order to catch some food. At the end of the tour the boat tour started. Allthough short (5 minutes) this was the absolute highlight of the tour because a lot of glow worms could be observed in the dark and without any noise. Unfortunately in the tour we'd booked, no photo's were allowed, even not without the use of flash, for economical reasons. So in the end we have had a great tour which we will never forget. It would have been nice if we could have shared this with our family with some pictures.
  • Great and easy way to experience the caves....we’ll guided paths, easy walk (a few stairs to navigate) and a very relaxing boat ride to see the glowworms and exit the caves. Tour guides are all related to the first discoverer of the caves and the commentary is nicely balanced between humour and fact. All in all a good experience - Adrenalin junkies may want to consider other options in the area.
  • Truly an amazing experience, with a funny and engaging tour guide with much to learn about the caves and glowworms. Tickets say you need to 'check-in' 30 minutes before, however upon doing so they just threw us into the half hour earlier group. Seemingly no one follows that rule. So turn up at your allocated time to save the hassle. It's only a ten minute boat ride at the end, people seem to get confused thinking it's entirely on boat. Our tour guide, Steven was entertaining and constantly engaged with everyone to ensure they enjoyed their tour. Glowworms are a spectacular view, however this cave tour doesn't allow photography at all. The Ruakuri caves allow photography in most sections and are fantastic beyond Waitomo caves. Highly recommend.
  • If you are wheelchair bound, one of the caves is accessible. It is about a 2 hour round trip that is a bit tight in places and even if you are a quite able para you will probably need some help in a few spots. It is a fantastic experience and highly recommend. Just like most tourist traps the food here is very expensive so you might want to bring your own lunch and drinks.
  • It's a really unique experience, so worth the trip but don't set your expectations too high. YMMV of course, but our guide was the least. interesting. tour guide. Ever. Like wow, might have been made of cardboard. Anyway several varied cave experiences to choose from, easy to do but very commercial. If you're looking for something that feels authentic look for one of the other cave companies in town.
