#1 of 8 in Parks in Waitomo Caves
Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. • We visited the Caves and took a boat ride in the Caves. There were so many glowworms, more than one can imagine. It was a magical experience to remember.  more »
  • We arrived at 12.15 and were told the first available time for the caves was 2 PM so come back at 1.45. We paid our $51 a person and went for a local walk. On arriving back at 1.45 we were stood in a ...  more »
  • To start, I want to clarify that we went for the cheapest package: just a 45 minute tour of one glowworm cave for ~$50. We also went in late February which, being summer in New Zealand, may be the hei...  more »

  • These are caves which are millions of years old.. very well maintained. The experience was one of a kind, like nothing I've ever seen..It's pitch black when you enter the caves they have a boat ride on the river which flows under the caves. The colonies of glow worms gave me goosebumps. Just Beautiful! Must visit.
  • To much like Disneyland. Buses drop off zillions of people... Crowded and felt like a cow getting pushed through the process. They put you in front of a green sceen age take your picture... Then super impose the glow worms. They don't let you take any photos... So you have to buy their fake photo. We skipped it. See the glow worms elsewhere, there are a number of great other venues.
  • If your interested in caves or seeing glow worms then you will love it. We were only expecting to just be given a tour of the glow worm cave itself but were walked through some caves prior to boarding the boat which was a nice extra. Tour guide was entertaining and friendly and shared some nice insights into local culture.
  • I can't comment on how these cages compare to others so I'll judge independently. This is a family run attraction which is professional and quaint in the best possible way. When you reach the main act it's a truly spectacular and worth the visit. I had no problem driving out my way to visit this natural wonder. Great for kids and adults, but children do need to be quiet as it echoes in the caves which can be a problem with high pitched screams, I'm sure you can imagine.
  • Great place to visit, the tour guide was very fun and enthusiastic, you learn quite a bit about the history of the caves. The worms were magical, although you can’t take pics in the caves. Only issue I had was the car park is on a very steep slope (I have a sprained ankle so was a challenge). But apart from that great place.
