#1 of 18 in Things to do in Waitomo Caves
Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. • We recommend the visit to the cave with the rafting activity. The water is cool, but it's a great experience that allows to see the worms glistening with an original physical activity. Too bad not being able to make its own pictures, they offer their photos on a key sold 30 NZ$. You will enjoy a shower at the end with a soup and grilled toast. Activity remains expensive but nice.

  • For now, the tour is completely run. Also must wait for at least an hour in, it may be because so much is going on. I personally thought it would take a boat through the cave and see many fireflies. This is also the case, however it is pulled by boat in a small "cave". There you can see a few fireflies on the ceiling and then it is pulled back. The whole thing takes about 5 minutes. You spend the remaining time in the cave and get the stalactite cave explained. I am very disappointed. It it totally overpriced was also.

  • The tour itself was fine. Our guide was knowledgeable and fun. However the tour itself is stretched fairly thin. You are there for the worms and that boat ride, which is amazing, but I feel for the fifty or so dollars per ticket they could have extended the initial cave walk. It is a fun experience, but perhaps you could try one of the other walks to get a greater experience from the trip.
  • Best experience ever, you will feel surreal when inside. We have done the black water rafting thing and it was an experience we would cherish forever, we also took the combo ticket for glow worm caves, but we felt black water rafting which also has many colonies of glow worms along the roof of the cave much better than normal glow worm tour even though you can see them! Floating in water with glow worms hanging from the ceiling takes you to another world, black labyrinth of black water rafting is highly recommended.
  • The guide was really nice and personable. Go for the 9:15am slot or a slot that's not right on the hour mark since it's less likely for people to reserve those time slots. It was a nice 45-minute tour through the caves and an overall lovely experience to see the worms. It's not a jaw-droppinh starry night, but it's quaint and beautiful in its own right.
  • We arrived at the site with a 14-year-old girl who enjoyed the explanations and the pleasant place before entering the cave. The cave tour was very interesting and experiential. The guide explained the special worms living in it. On the system of the caves and how they were discovered. And the tour ends with a pleasant and wonderful cruise in the cave. We chose the easy and tourist route. The venue also offers challenging routes for those interested.
  • Something you definitely have to do at least once in your lifetime! The caves are really incredible. The boat ride was absolutely magical. There are heaps of different tours available whether you're adventurous or not. Family friendly.
