Create an itinerary including Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. • We did the glow worm trip by boat and found it well worth a visit. The tour was Ngaroto 1 hour, with 30 min walk through the Cave and 20 min in the boat.

  • I loved it. It was like walking into a cathedral which had an atmosphere of peace and serenity. It was amazing. This is the first time I have been there but it was truly "awesome". Go if you get a chance. The glow worms were pretty and gliding in the boat was spectacular. I would love to go again one day.
  • Amazing tour guide with great information and history about the caves. Wonderful tour and the boat ride was a really great and calming experience. Definitely give this place a visit for intimate views of the glow worms in their natural habitat!
  • Chris was our guide today. He was very informative and friendly. A beautiful singing voice too! The tour was lovely and peaceful and I'm definitely glad I did this! Will recommend to anyone travelling through this area!!
  • Was here 15 years ago I think in late summer? During my summer program. Great experience all those lava look like stars on earth I don't know about it now but back then they are all over the cave ceiling. Would love to share my photo if not because I am bad at taking one and that camera was long lost. Anyway, reccomended place to visit.
  • Loved it! Enthusiastic Maori guide Cory will teach you while making you laugh. The glow worm boat trip was fab. The caves are beautiful (wish I could have taken photos but it isn't allowed) (*there is parking for a campervan; there's a bit of walking and stairs, at a slow pace, but wear comfortable shoes and wrap up, it's cold!)
