Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Waitomo Caves
Categories: Caves, Nature & Parks
Home to a species of glowworms found exclusively in New Zealand, Waitomo Glowworm Caves serve as one of the country's most popular natural landmarks. A magnet for both local and foreign visitors, this attraction offers guided tours through three underground levels linked by long vertical shafts made of limestone. Start at the visitor center, where you can learn about the history of this cave system. Guided tours depart from behind the center and take participants past huge stalactites and stalagmites. As you enter a giant cavern known as "the cathedral" and your eyes gradually adjust to the dim light, prepare to see thousands of tiny glowworms sparkling all around you. Put Waitomo Glowworm Caves into our Waitomo Caves holiday planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Awesome experience!!! We had the greatest tour guide. She even sang a Maori song for us in the cave to show the acoustics and gave us plenty of time under the glowworms. Absolutely beautiful experience and well worth the money to see.
Well organised and great staff. We really enjoyed this stop. Not usually people that enjoy touristy places, but it was amazing! The highlight was the boat trip at the end with the glowworms all around.
Waitomo Caves is an amazing tourist spot. The tour guides really know and understand the caves and anything you want to know about them from stalagmites to glow worms and their habitat. You can walk through 3 different caves or if you are feeling adventurous, take the black water tube route, jump off waterfalls and meander down the river looking up at the glow worms. Definitely a must to go to if you have the chance!
It was an incrediable expérience. Our tour guide Mahinarangi was awesome! Being a direct descendant of the local founder she did justice. She was very knowledgeable, patient, funny and even taught us a song in the cathedral BEAUTIFUL! I wish I recorded her singing, because it was touching! I think they should teach all the tourist that song. Definitely an unforgettable experience. Mahalo Nui Loa Mahinarangi 🌺
The cave tour is fairly typical of such explorations world-wide: looking at the cleverly named stalactite and stalagmite formations while receiving a heady warning not to touch, standing in the larger cavern and singing to listen to the notable acoustics, and finally winding down to a room that's kept in darkness. Here, however, the Waitomo caves become distinct, as you board a small rope-led boat on the underground river and are pulled through the otherwise pitch-black under a sky of tiny pinpoint green stars you feel you could almost reach up and touch. Perhaps it's my own experience with stories like those of H.P. Lovecraft which describe such unusual fauna of the dark, but being under those false-stars felt like nothing less than being in a completely different world to me. A literally awesome experience that I heartily recommend.
