(4.8/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Explore the rocky terrain and rich mining history of Karangahake Gorge, carved by the boulder-strewn Ohinemuri River. Hike or bike along the old railway line, inspect the remnants and ruins of the gold mining industry, and delve into some of the former railway and mining tunnels. Several old bridges span the foaming water, including a wire suspension bridge. Look for informative signs along the trails, pointing visitors towards places of interest and explaining the history of the area. Two cafes along the gorge provide refreshments and snacks. • One of the most unique places I've visited. A great combination of interesting history and amazing views.
  • There are the remains of an old gold mining town in the scenically very appealing destinations. About bridges and tunnels and relatively well-developed paths repeatedly release the look in a picturesque Canyon. Caution in the tunnel in wet and darkness: danger of slipping!

  • Nice place for a hike and and to appreciate the natural beauty of New Zealand and it's just off the highway.
  • Would be more stars if it wasn't for the waterfall I fell down. Other than that it's very beautiful scenery lovely rail way hike.
  • Lovely place for a hike- I'm partial to the Windows trail. Not a lot of vertical except for some initial stairs and then the stairs back down to the gorge. Parking can get a bit crowded at peak times but there's another lot just down SH2.
  • Nice trail to hike to see beautiful gorge and river. Walking on historical rail trail and visiting Victoria Battery can experience gold mining history.
  • Awesome place for bush walks and sightseeing. Well preserved and maintained.
