#2 of 18 in Things to do in Twizel
Sushi and sashimi lovers won't want to miss a trip to Mt. Cook Alpine Salmon Shop, a fascinating tale of aquaculture. The farm breeds freshwater king salmon, hatched and raised in the glacier waters of New Zealand's Southern Alps. The alpine environment provides a unique, fast-flowing habitat for the salmon, enhanced by the change in seasons. These unique conditions yield extremely fit salmon with a low fat content and dense texture. Striving to achieve sustainable aquaculture, the farm encourages breeding by providing plenty of space for the fish to grow with as little human interference as possible. Visit the shop and enjoy the flavor from the comfort of their picturesque patio overlooking the lake, or simply pick some up to go. Plan to visit Mt. • Staff members are friendly, and parking spaces are plenty though there are lots of tour buses stops by. Their salmons are grown in one of the lakes but not on this site; hence, they'll cut and pack the salmon in the factory first before delivered to their shop at this location. Prices are quite reasonable for the quality, and the view is marvelous. Easily best place to buy & enjoy New Zealand salmon.
  • Eat salmon sashimi with a stunning view of Lake Pukaki. Super fresh fish
  • Loved the salmon there. Absolute best
  • Yummy yummy King Salmon.
  • Excellent sashimi with stunning views. The price is very reasonable considering the quality of the product. The only drawback that I do not get 5 stars is that I believe that the area where you eat salmon, since ultimately they are a simple tables outdoors, little sheltered in case that wind or cold you could condition a little better as it was in our case.
